I am sure you are aware that legislators returned to Raleigh in January and have been busy working on a budget for the 2003-2005 biennium. As you can imagine, it is a challenging and difficult task with the current budget deficit that our state is experiencing and many programs competing for limited state dollars. If consortium services are as important to you as many of you tell me, please take the time now to find out who your legislators are and contact them regarding funding for the NC Model Teacher Education Consortium.

Telemedicine and Videoconferencing Services As one of five academic medical center teaching hospitals in North Carolina, Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., conducts residency programs in 10 medical and dental specialties and serves as an off-campus training site for three more. The medical center, along with Carolinas College of Health Sciences provide educational environments for more than 1,000 residents, medical students, physician extenders, nursing students and other allied health professionals annually. With its updated facilities, sophisticated technology, and advanced basic science and clinical research, Carolinas Medical Center is a particularly exciting place for future primary care physicians and medical subspecialists alike. This degree of technology does not replace compassion, however, because we emphasize human values and a spirit of caring for all who need care, regardless of status or financial ability. Carolinas HealthCare System also has a contractual agreement with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to manage Charlotte Area Health Education Center (AHEC). Charlotte AHEC coordinates and produces continuing education programming for employees of Carolinas HealthCare System and other providers in an eight-county region. We emphasize primary care training, enhancement of services in rural and urban under-served environments, and the development of new programs aimed at health promotion, disease prevention and improved healthcare outcomes.
