Family Outreach Study Guides Parent Education
Programming for Moore County
by Karen Wicker
Abstract: To identify what parents of young children need to prepare their children for school, a Family Outreach Study was conducted by the Moore County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. It was found that parents of young children sometimes feel they do not have the resources, support, nor skills to fulfill their role. It was also observed that although parents are motivated and have the desire to make changes for their children, they sometimes lack the skills and resources to take action. To address the needs identified in the Family Outreach Study, Parent Centers and the Parent Leadership Institute were implemented. Educational information and support for parents in Moore County has been fragmented in its approach to reach parents and to meet their needs. Through the years there have been parenting workshops for social service-referred and court-referred parents. There have been preschool story hours for parents of young children, and countywide health fairs to screen young children for delays. There has not been an overwhelming response by parents to either attend educational workshops or readily request information concerning their children. The goal, however, of Moore County parenting education programs is to motivate parents to attend educational workshops and to ask for information that could build their knowledge and skills in nurturing appropriate growth of their children.

As a family preparing to relocate, one of your primary concerns is the quality of the education provided by the local school system. Every parent wants to be assured that a transfer will not impede his or her child's education. But many parents are unsure how to evaluate a new school district. This page provides some questions to ask to help you gather a realistic portrait of the school environment and the type of education parents can expect their children to receive. Questions to ask of potential schools:
  • Budget: What has been the history of the school budget in the last five years? How does the per-pupil expenditure rank with neighboring communities, and with the state?
  • Statistics: What is the average class size? What is the maximum class size? What percentage of graduates go on to four-year colleges and has this figure changed significantly over the past five years? What percentage of graduates enter post-secondary education? What are the mean SAT or ACT scores and how do they compare to national means? What percentage of the senior class took the SAT's and ACT's?
  • College Attendance: What is the high school's track record in college admissions? How many graduates have been accepted at highly selective colleges, such as Ivy League schools? What percentage of the graduating class attends out-of-state colleges?

  • Points of contact Background on parenting education Parenting Education in North Carolina Who conducts parenting education? There is a concern that a professional credential for individuals teaching parents is not available. There are various ways to obtain instructional information about child development, family studies, and parenting practices. Several two and four-year colleges and universities offer undergraduate and graduate degrees that have parenting courses included in the child-related, family-related, or social work curriculum. Although there are a few opportunities to earn a national parenting education certification (ie., Parents as Teachers, Certified Family Life Educators through the National Council on Family Relations), there is not a consistently recognized parenting education certification process for the nation or in North Carolina. How NCPEN was formed U nder the leadership of Dr. Karen DeBord, The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service has organized a dialogue between organizations and agencies who provide parenting education programs for parents across the state. As a state child development Extension Specialist, Dr. DeBord recognized the need to collaboratively discuss and plan ways to address parenting education across the state.
