U sing T he O utdoors to T each E xperiential S cience Using The Outdoors to Teach Experiential Science is an exciting elementary teacher education project that transforms school grounds into educational resources for hands-on learning. Since 1991, more than 3,400 educators at 152 selected sites across North Carolina have taken part in the UTOTES experience. UTOTES Goals:
  • to promote positive attitudes of teachers and students toward living things to increase the use of the environment in teaching all subjects to develop site-based science leadership to enhance the value of school grounds as a learning resource through native plantings and the creation of wildlife habitats.
How Does UTOTES Work? Eight workshops led by a Museum naturalist are held at the school site during the school year. Teachers learn how to make better use of their current school environment and to assess the potential for improving the grounds as a place for wildlife and learning. Each workshop shares content information and has participants engage in practical, hands-on teaching strategies that use common plants and animals as a focus for multidisciplinary learning. A Project Team representing school faculty and administrators, parents, and other community resources is created to provide guidance and long-term support for developing, maintaining, and expanding the project. UTOTES resource materials help participants develop wildlife habitat projects and learning activities on their school grounds.

In this Voice of Experience essay, Fischer reflects on how getting parents involved in their students’ education also requires a variety of approaches. Should Schools Parent Our Kids? Program Office: Daisy Greenfield
U.S. Department of Education Announces $11. 7 Million in Support for Parent Education Resource Centers in 19 States
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today announced that nonprofit organizations working with school districts in 19 states will receive a total of $11.7 million to set up local parent information and resource centers in communities across the nation. "If we are to leave no child behind and offer each child a high-quality education, parents must be actively involved in their child's learning," Paige said. "We know that early childhood learning activities can help to close the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged children and their peers. To help all of our children read and learn well these centers can help share this and other valuable information with parents and teachers." States and territories that received new grants to establish centers include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Guam, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington
