WHAT IS EARLY INTERVENTION? Early Intervention means professionals working in partnership with parents of children with special needs to help their children develop their knowledge and skills to reach their potential. It builds upon the strengths found in all children and families. More than 20 years of research has proven that early intervention produces immediate and long term benefits for children with disabilities, their families and society.
Early Intervention
  • produces substantial gains in physical development, thinking skills, language and speech, psychological development, and self-help skills;
  • helps prevent the development of some disabilities;
  • reduces family stress; reduces the need for special class placement or special education programs once the child reaches school age,
  • helps enhance intelligence in some children; and, saves substantial costs to society and our nation's school.(Report Number 99-860, Committee on Education and Labor, House of Representatives, US Congress)

This applies to out-of-state residents as well, even though they may have received the DWI on a driver's license issued in another state. Upon conviction of a DWI and revocation of the driver's license, the National Driver's License Registry places "stops" or "holds" on a person's license. These can only be removed when that person has completed all requirements for re-instatement of driving privileges in the state where the conviction occurred. This includes the substance abuse assessment, education or treatment requirements that are conditions for re-instatement of privileges in North Carolina.

"I'm really pretty proud of the school system."
- Resident Robbins Elementary was also one of ten schools in the state last year to get a UTOTES grant (Using The Outdoors to Teach Experiential Science). Areas outside the campus will be developed as teaching areas for students and community members. For example, a butterfly garden is a possible benefit of the grant. This grant will utilize people from the community in the development of multiple projects to enhance students' learning experiences. The recent influx of the Hispanic population to the Robbins area has presented a new challenge to the northern Moore school system. Currently, 37% of the students at Robbins Elementary School are of Hispanic origin. The elementary school employs three ESL teachers and a number of teaching aides who are bilingual. Many community members commented that these teachers have been instrumental in helping to integrate the classrooms. However, others expressed concern that with a growing number of non-English speaking children, there are not enough resources to meet the need. One resident spoke of the continuing frustration felt by the schools as they struggle to meet the needs of the students: We are experiencing some sort of difficulties for the new immigrants, especially for the little kids, second and first graders up - there is very little bilingual help. We see families emigrating from other countries and the schools are facing a tough task of making kids understand.

    So am I that's why I'm providing
    A variety of kinds of play You're asking me the value
    Of blocks and other such play?
    Your children are solving problems.
    They will use that skill every day. You're asking what's the value
    Of having your children play? Your daughter's creating a tower; She may be a builder someday. You're saying you don't want your son To play in that "sissy" way? He's learning to cuddle a doll; He may be a father someday. You're questioning the interest center: They just look like useless play? Your children are making choices, They'll be on their own someday. You're worried your children aren't learning; And later they'll have to pay?" They're learning a pattern for learning; For they'll be learners always. Author: Leila P. Fagg
