Research Services covering all counties in North Carolina Services provided by Jud Campbell About Me: I am currently a student at UNC-Chapel Hill. I have been doing genealogical research for five years. I have experience with article preparation as well as professional research. My primary regional focus has been North Carolina and New England. I am currently doing genealogical research on Orange County and Durham County North Carolina families from 1752 to about 1880. I follow the guidelines for research presented within the BCG Standards Manual. I will give you honest and quality work for prices much lower than a usual professional genealogist. Services Available: I will perform lookups in specific books selected by the customer or research on a particular subject as specified by the customer. Requests should be specific enough that a reasonable search is possible. You should be aware that I am not a professional genealogist. Rather, I am a college student who has genealogical experience and talent as well as immediate access to extensive resources on North Carolina genealogy. You may wish to use me as a first option before going to a more expensive genealogist with more expertise and resources. Available Resources: The resources that I use are those that are available in the libraries of Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the State Library of North Carolina.

This page is written as a finding aid for beginning genealogists interested in families from North Carolina. As such, there are general sources applicable to all beginning genealogists, and some applicable only to North Carolina genealogy. Introduction to the Field
In its broadest sense, genealogy is the study of one's family and how one is related to other family members, be they immediate family members or distant ancestors. In order to find more about a person's ancestors, most genealogists interview relatives, study public records, and read published genealogies (written accounts of people and their descendants or ancestors). While the amount of work involved can seem daunting to the beginning genealogist, it can easily turn into a fascinating adventure in rediscovering lost family connections to the past.
When using an online catalog or a search engine to find resources concerning genealogy in North Carolina, the following subject headings or keywords are very useful for finding what you want. Simply do a subject or keyword search with the appropriate subject heading or keyword. Please remember that your search strategy will vary depending on the online catalog or search engine you use. Be sure to read all the available instructions. You may be able to do more advanced searches by using the Boolean operators "and," "or," and "not."

My ancestor was living in Bertie County during the time of the Revolution. Was it likely that he served in the Military?
All men were enrolled in the "militia", but not all would have served in the Continental Line. For "tax purposes", all men were listed according to the Military District in which they lived. We have some of these Tax Lists on-line
See Bertie County History for a better understanding of the political times.
See Number of Bertie Men serving in Militia - compare it with total population and that of other counties. What is the difference between the Continental Line and the Militia?
The Militia was every man on the Tax List and mainly served to protect the military district itself.
The Continental Line were the men who were drafted or volunteered to serve in the actual Army fighting against the British.

    GENEALOGY
Perkins Library has many items of interest to the genealogist, including local histories and published family genealogies. Although there is no separate genealogical division in the library, a subject search in the online catalog (for items cataloged since 1979 as well as many older materials) or the card catalog (many of the items cataloged prior to 1979) can be used to find items relating to genealogy. The following subject headings may be helpful:
SUBJECT CARD CATALOG AND ONLINE CATALOG
    • To find books about a family, look under the family's last name (for example, "Morrison Family"). To find books about a county, look under the name of the county. To find books about genealogy for a particular geographic location or specific ethnic group, look under the name of the location plus the word "genealogy" (for example, "North Carolina genealogy"; "Afro-Americans genealogy").

    Other important subject headings include:
Cemeteries Obituaries Church records and registers Peerage Deeds Probate Records Epitaphs Registers of births, etc.
