Head of Database Development, North Carolina State University Libraries, Raleigh, North Carolina
The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of Database Development to manage database development in the Cataloging Department. The position combines standard MARC catalog maintenance and authorities activities with development and maintenance of non-MARC databases, for example, the NCSU Authors Database ( http://databases.lib.ncsu.edu/NCSUAuthors/ ) and the Design Image Collection ( http://databases.lib.ncsu.edu/design/slides/search/ ). The Head of Database Development performs original cataloging, as well as authority work, in the Sirsi Unicorn system and works with staff outside of the Department that are engaged in development of cross-collection search tools, currently within the Blue Angel MetaStar environment. The Cataloging Department ( http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/cataloging/cathome.htm ) consists of 6 librarians, 16 staff, a Computing Consultant, and a Libraries Fellow. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head of Database Development manages all activities of the Database Management group, currently 6.5 paraprofessionals working on catalog maintenance and non-MARC database maintenance activities. Responsible for hiring, training, development, and evaluation assigned staff. This position performs some original cataloging, including description and subject analysis, of print and non-print materials, as well as authority work. All Cataloging Department librarians work with copy cataloging staff to provide LC subject headings and classification for copy lacking these access points and to provide feedback on difficult copy cataloging decisions.
