Luther Hartwell Hodges Born - March 9, 1898 Born in: Pittsylvania County, VA Died - October 6, 1974 Buried in: Eden Occupation: Industrialist Party: Democrat More Hodges Pictures. Born in Virginia but growing up in Leaksville, NC, Luther Harwell Hodges was a graduate of the North Carolina public schools and the University of North Carolina. Twenty-seven years after receiving his A.B. degree in 1916, Hodges received an honorary LL.D. from the University. His work career began while he attended the University when he worked at the Leaksville-Spray mills. Later, he spent his major work career with the Marshall Field Company where he advanced quickly and steadily to the office of vice president. Concurrently, he was active in state and federal affairs, organized one of the first vocational schools in the state, and served as a board member of the State Board of Vocational Education. In 1952, Hodges was elected Lieutenant Governor. Because of Governor Umstead's illness, he was involved heavily in running the state government. Upon Umstead's death, he completed his term for Governor and was elected for his own four-year term in 1956. Return to the North Carolina Governors 1921-Present page.
