Education Public Schools Private Schools Higher Education ... Special Schools Academic Excellence Academic Excellence Academic Excellence for all students is the commitment of Wilson County Schools. The school system, as well as all other segments of our county, realizes our children are our future, thus academic success for each and every one of them is critical. To this end, we are striving to provide the most rigorous, stimulating instructional programs possible. Following are examples of our commitment to Academic Excellence. Early Literacy Program Middle Grade Initiatives The major instructional foci in grades 6-8 are reading, writing, and mathematics, just as in the elementary grades. Instructional initiatives include a revision of the vocational education curriculum to include more technology instructional and applications and the establishment of focused intervention programs to provide additional assistance for students scoring below level three on state end-of-grade tests. High School Curriculum After an in-depth study of the high school curriculum by the High School Advisory Committee, the Board of Education approved several changes for the current curriculum, effective the 1996-97 school year. Providing for a higher level of academic opportunity for students, these changes include additional requirements of an English elective, a computer elective, and a second United States history course. With these additional units, the total specific requirements will be 18 with 29 being the total units needed for graduation for the 1996-97 freshmen class. Also, several new electives in the areas of English, math, social studies, physical education, second languages, cultural arts, and vocational education have been added to the curriculum.

July 2, 2002
MURFREESBORO - The James E. and Mary Z. Bryan Foundation has just added $20,000 to its endowment fund through the North Carolina Community Foundation, which will benefit Chowan College students.
"On behalf of the Chowan College Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, students and parents, I extend my sincerest thanks for this thoughtful and generous attention to the college's endowment program. The James E. and Mary Z. Bryan Foundation has played an important role in the development of Chowan College since 1974 and Chowan continues to serve young people with the help of the Foundation," wrote Dr. Stanley Lott, president of Chowan College, to Dr. James M. Zealy, president of the Foundation and brother of Mary Zealy Bryan. The Bryan's were members of First Baptist Church of Goldsboro.
"I remember when the Foundation was set up," commented Zealy during a telephone interview. Since the couple was unable to have children of their own, "They wanted to help other North Carolina boys and girls who were studious and needy to have access to college or technical school programs," Zealy continued. He added that the couple recognized the need for skilled men and women in the workforce. Chowan was selected because of its location in the eastern part of the state and because it serves more needy students than some of the more prosperous areas of the piedmont.

We've introduced a number of initiatives that highlight the importance we give to ensuring and enhancing the overall quality of education. Among them are:
  • More at Four . More at Four is a new initiative to provide high quality pre-kindergarten programs for "at-risk" four-year olds and prepare them for success in school. The focus is one of shared responsibility for these children. The program builds on the existing service delivery system for pre-kindergarten classes including those of public preschools, community child-care centers, HeadStart and SmartStart. Class-Size Reduction. Class-size reduction in the early grades is a proven strategy for increasing student achievement, decreasing discipline problems, and supporting teachers. In 2001, some 274 new teachers were hired to reduce 832 kindergarten classes in 111 of the state's 117 school districts. In addition, class sizes were reduced to 15 in grades k-3 in the 36 highest poverty and lowest-performing elementary schools in 2001. First in America ABCs of Public Education . The framework for educational progress in North Carolina, the ABCs of Public Education focuses on strong Accountability, an emphasis on the Basics and high educational standards, and maximum local Control. Through the ABCs, educators are given much more control over the schools in which they work and flexibility to make their own decisions. They are able to determine the best methods for improving student achievement and rewarded and recognized for their success. In addition to systemic efforts to raise academic standards, North Carolina's approach to improving education also includes raising teacher standards and teacher salaries.
