Unit 3
China's Population
Teacher's Note This unit is designed to give students a feel for the huge population of China, and the serious problem of population. Some large cities in China are given municipal status and are comparable to provinces. (See Political Divisions of this section for more details.) The following chart on population statistics can be used to highlight the size of China. Have the students find out the population of the following places: - your town, city or county - your state - New York City - Utah, Nevada, Montana, North Dakota or Wyoming and have students compare them with similar geographic areas in China. A map may be useful to locate population density. For example: - North Dakota or Utah and Gansu or Xinjiang - New York City and Shanghai or Beijing - your county or state and a province of comparable size if there is one. The multiple birth rate per hundred means that out of every one hundred women in Guizhou, for example, 28.30 of them will have more than one child. Note the difference in the rate between the cities (Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin) and the rural areas, especially Hainan, Yunnan, Xinjiang, and Fujian provinces. This highlights a point found in a number of the student readings, namely, that controlling the rural population is where the real difficulty lies, since more sons means more help on the farm and hence greater levels of production. (Recall the reading " Wet Rice Agriculture " and the need for more "hands on the farm.")

Tech Pros Flee 'Burbs
For Open-Space Locales By J OEL K OTKIN
F or much of the past twenty years, high-tech development has generally followed a predictable pattern: towards the periphery of major metropolitan areas. Starting with Route 128 near Boston and Silicon Valley, the fastest growing tech areas have been those close to certain urban centers. Yet, with the rise of the Internet and growing frustrations with life in the increasingly crowded Nerdistans, there has been a discernible movement of skilled professionals and their wealth- generating capacity to what may be called "leapfrog" tech poles. Increasingly influential environmental and "anti-growth" movements in places like the Route 101 Corridor, Orange County and Northeastern New Jersey may also play a role in shifting development further away. "Leapfrog" areas are defined as those that have substantial open space between themselves and any major metropolitan area. In some cases, they are areas that are a county or two outside the metropolitan fringe; in others, they can be hundreds of miles from any major metro area. Recent evidence in the last census, as well as technology surveys conducted by the Milken Institute, indicate that the high-tech revolution is beginning to move further out into these communities in the nation's hinterlands. In many ways, this parallels the 20th-century pattern of industrial growth which started in New England and the Middle Atlantic states and gradually shifted first to the less expensive, more centrally located Midwest and, later, to the states of the Old Confederacy. Today, although often very different in terms of their needs, the digital revolution may be about to follow a similar pattern out of its home base in the Nerdistans and "boutique cities" and into at least certain parts of the great American hinterlands.
