Bibliography of Agricultural and Rural Life Literature 1860-1945: North Dakota
Enter search terms:
Introduction
This bibliography was developed as part of North Dakota's participation in the National Program for the Preservation of Agricultural and Rural Life Literature. The national project is a cooperative effort of land-grant university libraries, Cornell University, USAIN (United States Agricultural Information Network), and the National Agricultural Library, and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The overall goal of the national program is to identify publications pertinent to agriculture and rural life published prior to 1946, and to preserve those items adjudged to be essential by means of archival quality microfilm. For more information about the national project, its progress, and participating libraries, and for more information about North Dakota's participation, please go to our USAIN/NEH grant information page The North Dakota bibliography was compiled in 2000/2001. A panel of experts in agriculture, rural sociology, and agriculture examined a working copy in order to rank the entries by importance for preservation; the highest ranked items (if they could be found) were microfilmed by Preservation Resources of Bethlehem, PA. Entries for the items microfilmed by this project are indicated by the note:

7 Morrill Hall, Fargo, ND 58105-5665 April 29, 1999 North Dakota Losing Public Libraries; Technology Helps Fill Gap The number of public libraries in North Dakota dropped by 16 during the first half of the decade, from 95 in 1990 down to 79 in 1995. The greatest decline occurred between 1992 and 1993, when the number of public libraries shrank by 12, according to the most recent Economic Brief released from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University. "The loss of libraries in the state reflects a struggle many of our small towns face—dwindling services to a dwindling population base," said Richard Rathge, data center director. "Technology is offering some solutions to this problem. The Internet, for example, is providing information resources to those in rural areas regardless of population base. Although few books are available for reading on the Internet, newspapers, government documents and a host of other resources can be found. The pace at which the Internet is expanding and the variety of resources that are becoming available through this medium represent good news for rural areas." North Dakota public libraries reported nearly $6.8 million in total operating income in 1995. Of that amount, 76 percent came from local sources, roughly 7 percent from state funds, less than 0.5 percent from federal sources, and more than 16 percent from other sources such as gifts, donations, service fees and fines.

415 Winter Show Rd Suite 2 http://ndlcresource.org Is this an active project, a project in development, or an idea for a future project: With the implementation of North Dakota’s new broadband telecommunication network the state now has access to a broadband network that serves the needs of education, libraries and museums. The completed network will connect 222 cities and 544 locations to broadband technology throughout the state of North Dakota. At this time all campuses of higher education and all K12 schools have been connected to the network. By summer, 2002, all libraries will also be on the state network. State analysts believe this network will provide the state with the greatest universal access to high-speed telecommunication services of any rural state in the nation. Brief project description: North Dakota’s state network will allow schools from across the state to connect to the new and expanded educational activities and collaborations available through the Internet 2.
