Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

"Let's face it, every profession and trade has licensing requirements, from doctor, lawyer, architect, or accountant to plumber and cosmetologist. Don't our kids deserve standards, too, for the people who serve them? Doesn't the public's interest in education need to be protected just as much as the public's interest in health or in buildings and bridges that don't fall down?"
Sandra Feldman, president, American Federation of Teachers WHERE WE STAND ON TEACHER LICENSURE Building a Profession: Strengthening Teacher Preparation and Induction
Review the AFT's recommendations for strengthening the teaching profession. This report released by the AFT's K-16 Teacher Education Task Force calls for more rigorous standards and preparation for new teachers, for teacher education programs to be more closely linked to the teaching profession and more directly involved in the teacher induction activities of local school districts, and more. I gnoring Standards
