The Origin of the Northern Mariana Islands
Museum of History and Culture
The need to establish a museum to help preserve the culture and history of the Northern Mariana Islands was considered "long overdue" twenty years ago. By 1987, the Division of Historic Preservation under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs (DCCA) was actively involved in the planning and establishment of the Commonwealth Museum. The excavation of the shipwrecked Spanish galleon, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (1638) became international news with the September 1990 issue of National Geographic. Funding to support the development of the Commonwealth Museum was made available soon thereafter through Public Law 7-36. The Legislature appropriated $1,215,000.00 of the Commonwealth's share from the sale of the Concepción artifacts for "building renovation , operations, activities and acquisitions of the Commonwealth Museum . . ." and placed it under the jurisdiction of the DCCA in September of 1991. An interim Museum Advisory Board was created to provide advice to the Division of Historic Preservation on matters relating to the development of the museum. The organization of a "Friends of the Commonwealth Museum" was also established with intent to seek 501 C3 status for the solicitation of private funds for the museum.

Woman weaving roofing material from palm leaves, as it has been done for centuries. Traditionally, the Refalawasch were a communal society - sharing food and community responsibilities . Today, they struggle to maintain the ancient customs as their traditional culture erodes in the wake of foreign immigration and influence.
"I lived on Pagan, a stunning volcanic island covered with lush jungles and ringed with white and black sand beaches. There were only 50 people on the island. Everyone cooperated and shared the fruits of the land and the sea. We had no electricity. We grew our food and gathered fish from the rich body of water surrounding our land. We depended on the goods from supply ships. We also relied on the ancient voices of the spirits to tell us when typhoons would arrive."
-Cinta M. Kaipat "Back then when I was a kid, we used to live down in Susupe. We'd run out to the beaches. There were no hotels. I recall just looking over the lagoon and I could see the bottom, the sand, because the beach was clean. But right now, with these hotels built along the beachside, we can never look back."
-Gus Kaipat
Young man in traditional dress. Western clothes are worn by most Refalawasch today, with the traditional attire reserved for ceremonies.

    Current Status
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders represent very diverse populations in terms of ethnicity, language, culture, education, income level, English proficiency, and sociopolitical experience. Although cultural ties exist among the different AA/PI communities, it is important to recognize the differences among the groups. Geographic Distribution Family Structure Education On average, Asian Americans have attained more education than any other ethnic group in the United States. In 2000, 44 percent of Asian Americans age 25 years or older had a college or professional degree, whereas only 28 percent of the white population had achieved that level of education (U.S. Census Bureau, 2001b). According to 1997 data, 58 percent of Americans who descended from natives of the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka) had under-graduate, graduate, or professional degrees. Income Three factors are important to note when examining the income characteristics of AA/PIs. First, there are substantial ethnic group differences in average income. Second, it is important to control for family size because AA/PIs tend to have large extended families. Finally, in some groups, income averages may disguise the bimodal income distribution within a population.
