    Study of Norwegian
Students at St. Olaf have the opportunity to study a unique subject Norwegian. St. Olaf is one of a few colleges and universities where students can use Norwegian to complete their foreign language requirement and beyond the requirement can study the language, literature, culture, and history of Norway in depth. In addition to graduating with a major in Norwegian, St. Olaf students have many opportunities to study and travel in Norway. The study of Norwegian opens the door to another culture and another way of viewing the world and develops skills in communication, research, analytical thinking, and writing that are essential in a wide range of careers. Former students report time and again that a knowledge of Norwegian is a rare and appealing skill that gives them an edge over other graduates. Some of the world's best literature awaits discovery by students of Norwegian: works by authors like Ibsen, Hamsun, and Undset, as well as by writers who have not been translated into English. Norwegian also enables many students to explore their cultural heritage, and encourages contact with relatives and friends in Norway. NorWord - learn Norwegian by email
courtesy King Features Syndicate In 1995, Nancy Aarsvold , a Norwegian instructor at Augsburg College, and Louis Janus of the University of Minnesota created an email-based introduction to the Norwegian language which they called NorWord. The idea was to introduce a Norwegian phrase every day, with examples of usage and related words and phrases. NorWord ran from April through November 1995. In all, 160 lessons were sent. These were archived on a public Gopher server, but that server was shut down in 1999. Fortunately, I had a copy of the NorWord lessons on my computer. I split the archive files into separate daily lessons and set up a server to send one lesson every day. At first, I only sent the lessons to myself, but later I began sending them to others who requested them, with the permission of the authors. Now you can receive these lessons too. The "course" takes about 6 months with lessons every weekday and extra materials on the weekends. To view sample lessons near the beginning and end of the series, click on these links: Lesson 30 (week 5, day 1)

The Norwegian class on the Net
    "Learning by Sharing"
Of the three major Scandinavian languages, Norwegian is the least common, and therefore the hardest to find learning materials for. There are dozens of Web sites related to learning Swedish and Danish, but only a few for Norwegian. For this reason, some of us who are interested in the Norwegian language have banded together to form Norskklassen, an online "virtual class" in the form of a mailing list. The aim of Norskklassen is to help its members learn Norwegian by writing, reading, and where possible, listening. All are welcome to join us, and we have a fairly high "lurker" population, but we do encourage members to write in Norwegian whenever they manage. As with all things, what you get out of it depends on what you put in. The primary language of Norskklassen is English, since the majority of our members are from English-speaking countries. But we also have members in places like South America, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and yes, Norway! Norskklassen does not have a lecturer; in fact, the list owner is a learner too. However, we do have some expert advisors who help in correcting written exercises and answering the more difficult questions raised by class members.
