Microsoft software available in more than 30 languages
By Lars Bevanger
BBC correspondent in Oslo The software giant Microsoft has agreed to translate their popular Office software into a language very few people know exists. Nynorsk has less than 400,000 everyday users It is called New Norwegian, or Nynorsk, and it is Norway's second official language. But the new language version did not come about without a fight. The world's most used office software is already available in more than 30 languages. Alternative language Nynorsk was created in the late 1800s as an alternative to the Danish-influenced official written Norwegian language. It remains obligatory to learn in schools, and it must be used by a certain number of government employees. But with less than 400,000 everyday users, the Microsoft company did not initially respond to calls for making their Office software available in New Norwegian.

On Windows, Nynorsk, Sami and Catalan By Drew Cullen Posted: 22/01/2003 at 23:23 GMT
Letters Our recent-ish article Windows comes to Nynorsk , prompted a big response, mostly from Norwegians and Brits with a smattering of Catalans responding to our call to arms.
According to the old saw , a language is a dialect with an army and a navy, a criterion by which Nynorsk and Catalan are both found wanting. By the more modern yardstick - is there a local version of Microsoft Office? - Nynorsk, a Norwegian language will soon pass muster, but the six million-plus speakers of Catalan, have still to make the grade, as do the 56 million or so English English speakers, Reg Reader Chaz Bocock argues:
When will we get an English version of Windows? :((, Or do we have to live with "Favorites" and "Network Neighborhood"

Scandinavian Studies at Augustana
Why Scandinavian Studies?
Augustana offers one of Canada's few university programs in Scandinavian Studies with a focus on the Norwegian Language. When you learn Norwegian, the door is open to two other languages and cultures as well, since Norwegian, Swedish and Danish are mutually intelligible. Course offerings at Augustana focus on the Norwegian language, Scandinavian culture and the literatures of Scandinavia. Students may combine Scandianvian Studies with Frech or German to obtain a modern languages degree. A minor in Scandianvian Studies is also available. Scandiavia is well known for its contributions in the areas of conflict resolution, gender equality and the promotion of indigenous and human rights. This region has also produced numerous authors, politicians, explorers, musicians, and other cultural figures who have had a major impact on their fields, including Hans Christian Andersen, Gro Harlem Brundtland, Edvard Grieg, Henrik Ibsen, Søren Kierkegaard, Edvard Munch, Fridtjof Nansen, August Strindberg and Liv Ullmann. If you are interested in any of these issues or cultural figures, Augustana's Scandinavian program has something to offer you.
