What are nuclei really like? This is the primary question of nuclear sciencea blend of chemistry and physics, with a dash of computer science (for data acquisition and analysis) and nuclear engineering (for neutron facilities). Partial answers to the question come from small scale experiments; the simple ones (based on one discipline or technique) have been done, but interesting questions remain to be answered by a suitable blend of techniques. We emphasize the studies of radioactive materials that require chemical isolation and purification combined with high precision measurements of radiations accompanying radioactive decay. Some projects are chosen because of their obvious applications (e.g., analyzing nuclear waste, or contributing to a catalog of gamma-ray spectra) and others are chosen "just for fun" (e.g., characterizing the decay of

John E. Bodnar Bodnar earned a B.A. and a M.A. from John Carroll University and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Among many honors, he has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation, and an IU Department of History Teaching Excellence Award. He has served on the editorial boards of Oral History Review and Journal of American Ethnic History , and on the executive boards of the National Council of Public History and the Immigration History Society. Bodnar is a prolific and influential historian of the twentieth-century United States. Through arguments grounded in the daily experience of immigrants and creative use of oral history, Bodnar fundamentally reshaped the field of immigration history in The Transplanted (1985). His 1992 book

Seaborg's leadership, also, whole new bodies of methodology and instrumentation havebeen developed and have become a cornerstone of modern nuclear chemistry.

Glenn Theodore Seaborg was born in Ishpeming, Michigan, on April 19, 1912. At the age of 10 he moved with his family to California, in 1929 he graduated at David Starr Jordan High School in Los Angeles as valedictorian of his class.
He entered the University of California, Los Angeles , in 1929, and received the degree of Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory. He was co-discoverer of plutonium and all further transuranium elements through element 102.
In addition to the discovery of transuranium elements, Dr. Seaborg and his colleagues are responsible for the identification of more than 100 isotopes of elements throughout the Periodic Table. He is also author of the actinide concept of heavy element electronic structure. In this connection, Dr. Seaborg demonstrated that the heavy elements form a "transition" series of actinide elements in a manner analogous to the rare-earth series of lanthanide elements. The concept demonstrated how the heavy elements fit into the Periodic Table and thus demonstrated their relationships to the other elements.
The body of information assembled in Dr. Seaborg's laboratory has made it possible to predict the radioactive characteristics of many isotopes of elements still to be found. Under Dr. Seaborg's leadership, also, whole new bodies of methodology and instrumentation have been developed and have become a cornerstone of modern nuclear chemistry. Dr. Seaborg is the author of approximately 200 scientific papers, including a number of comprehensive reviews and compilations in scientific publications. He is also author and co-author of several books on chemistry and the elements.

M. de Goeij The 7th International Conference on Nuclear Analytical Techniques in the Life Sciences (NAMLS-7), cosponsored by IUPAC, was held 16-21 June 2002 in Antalya, Turkey. The preparations and entire organization were handled by Dr. Namik. K. Aras (University of Bahcesehir, Istanbul, Turkey), with the help of Dr. R.M. Parr (formerly of IAEA, Vienna, Austria). About 170 participants from 39 countries, attended the conference. The conference was held in an excellent on-shore hotel with a beautiful panorama. There were no parallel sessions, thereby enabling participants to follow all oral presentations. The program contained sufficient free time and some social and tourist activities, which stimulated the participants in having informal individual and group discussions. It was clearly demonstrated that nuclear analytical techniques (NATs)–sometimes together with complementary isotope tracer techniques–are still important, in spite of the development of many other analytical techniques. They may provide interesting additional information, and sometimes even unique information that cannot be obtained otherwise. Following are a few examples: radioactive selenium in the elucidation of the composition and function of selenoproteins, radioactive and stable zinc isotopes in assessing zinc status and utilization of dietary zinc, NATs for the determination of "difficult" elements, for certification of reference materials, and/or for testing other analytical techniques, including speciation.

This position will support a range of laboratory efforts in the general area of radiation detection and nuclear science. Many of the programs involve exploration and validation of novel physics that underlies a potential new technology for radiation detection. One substantial program involves research geared towards the development of ultra-low-background instruments and systems able to record double beta decay events and thereby further the study of fundamental nuclear physics. Still other projects involve support to applied research geared toward important national security problems such as homeland security, proliferation detection, and arms control. Theoretical and numerical calculations may also be an important part of the research. Qualifications include working towards a bachelor's degree in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Chemistry or related field. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)
The nuclei of some atoms, but not all, behave as if they were rotating, or spinning, about an axis passed through them, much as a top spins about its central axis. This is quite easily visualized in terms of the particle nature of the nucleus; it is less easily visualized in terms of the wave picture, which by now we know is another face of nature that is manifested in the atomic/molecular realm. Spin of nuclei is similar to electron spin. Examples of atoms whose nuclei spin are hydrogen, fluorine, the 13 isotope of carbon, and the 15 isotope of nitrogen. There are many others that will not be listed here. The focus in this chapter will be on the spin of the hydrogen nucleus, because hydrogen atoms occur very frequently in molecules and are therefore very useful in determination of structure. When placed in a strong magnetic field, the spinning motion of the hydrogen atom gives rise to two energy levels. These are shown in an energy level diagram in Figure 1 The spin can be promoted from the lower to the higher level by interacting with and absorbing energy from electromagnetic radiation in the radio frequency (RF) region of the spectrum.
