Invitation to Nunavut
Canada's new arctic territory seeks tourists
By DAVID CRARY Associated Press Canada's newest territory may not exist until next year, but Nunavut already has a travel handbook and the authorsand editors don't sugar-coat their invitation, emphasizing in great detail the many perils facing visitors to the eastern Arctic. Snowdrifts, ice and an abandoned car are shown in Iqaluit in this March, 1998 file photo. CP
(First featured: March 25, 1999)
IF YOU GO:
GETTING THERE:
Flights to Iqaluit originate in Montreal and Ottawa. The town of Rankin Inlet can be reached from Winnipeg or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Round-trip airfares under $1,000 are hard to come by. Within Nunavut, most smaller communities are served by twice- or thrice-weekly scheduled flights. There are no highways into Nunavut or connecting its far-flung towns.
CLIMATE: In midwinter, most of Nunavut gets only about three hours of daylight, and daytime temperatures average around -20 F (-30 C). In the summer, when the sun is up nearly around the clock, daytime temperatures are usually around 50 F (10 C) in Iqaluit and around freezing in the farthest-north areas. Most of Nunavut receives relatively little precipitation, but frequent high winds can create blizzard conditions in the winter.

  • As DEA wars with Eurocorp-sponsored dealers, Canadian government cracks down on illegal drug trade, especially in a war between the RCMP and biker gangs in Quebec; Quebec citizens feel persecuted by increasing government intervention
  • Relations between Canadian government and Quebec deteriorate; the FLQ terrorist group becomes active again, waging a terror campaign in Quebec and Ottawa
  • Canadian cities struggle to cope, as War Measures Act reinstituted in Quebec; meanwhile, heavy flooding in prairies, combined with dwindling government financial aid, means many small farms being bought out by agri-corps, and displaced farmers begin flooding cities
  • World Stock Market crash; U.S. economy collapses; Canadian stock market goes down in flames, leading to chaos in Toronto and Vancouver; Canadian dollar goes through the floor, and several banks go bankrupt, leaving hundreds of thousands penniless; civil unrest begins to develop; as Quebec government presses harder for separation, FLQ ups ante in campaign, begins random targeting, as opposed to government targets

http://www.uni.ca/lb_saul_e.html
MY CANADA INCLUDES THE NORTH
Seen from Nunavut, how do our founding parents LaFontaine and
Baldwin look? Rather farsighted, it seems
by John Ralston Saul I've been in Pond Inlet for the past three weeks 1,000 kilometres north of Iqaluit, near the top of Baffin Island. The peculiar coincidence of writing from here about myths born in south-central Canada imposes its own logic. After all, this is a Canadian reality 1,400 citizens in a high-Arctic town, working to fit Inuit culture together with that of the South. The challenge is obvious, even though Pond Inlet is both a successful community and, it must be said, one of the most beautiful in the country. What about LaFontaine and Baldwin? Well, it strikes me that the territory of Nunavut is a perfect extension to their 1848 idea, which was to create the first intentionally non-monolithic, democratic nation-state. I sometimes think of Canada as the first postmodern nation-state, invented 150 years before the idea of postmodernity. During the three years in office, from 1848 to 1851, of the great coalition of Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin, the basic shape and direction of our society were set: the foundations of our democracy (including democratic municipal government), much of our legal system, a professional bureaucracy, the beginnings of public education and public universities, and the beginnings of a railway system. And, of course, the concept of two official languages and cultures was formalized. Perhaps most important, through the government's understated reaction to the burning of Parliament, it was demonstrated that restraint by those with power was the key to a successful society built upon complexity.

Canada occupies all of North America N of the United States (and E of Alaska) except for the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. It is bounded on the E by the Atlantic Ocean, on the N by the Arctic Ocean, and on the W by the Pacific Ocean and Alaska. A transcontinental border, formed in part by the Great Lakes, divides Canada from the United States; Nares and Davis straits separate Canada from Greenland. The Arctic Archipelago extends far into the Arctic Ocean. About 40% of the Canadian population are of British descent, and over 25% are of French origin. The influx of many European, Asian, and Indian immigrants has steadily diversified the country's ethnic composition, especially in major cities. Over 75% of the total population live in cities. Canada has complete religious liberty, though its growing multiculturalism has at times caused tensions among ethnic and religious groups. The country is almost equally divided between Roman Catholics (46%) and Protestants (41%). The largest Protestant denominations are United Church of Canada, Anglican Church of Canada, and Presbyterian. English and French are the official languages, and federal documents are published in both languages. In 1986, 62% of Canadians cited English as their mother tongue, while 25% cited French.

Nunavut, Canada land of the Inuit
Canada’s new Arctic Territory, once considered a no-man’s land or tundra, is home to the Inuit people. Nunavut, which means “our land,” in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit, has a population of about 27,000, with an Inuit population of about 23,000. Nunavut is far from being a wasteland. It is a place of considerable natural beauty with an abundance of wildlife. The short summers are filled with color, as the beauty of fireweed, arctic heather and rhododendron explode under the 24 hour sunshine. July and August are the summer months, with average temperatures of 50 F. bodyOffer(17726) The Inuit people, formerly known as Eskimo’s, have been in Nunavut for thousands of years. When their ancestors arrived in Nunavut, there were already some occupants there, whom they called Tuniit. So those early Inuit inhabitants adapted and survived in the frozen environment of the arctic for thousands of years as hunters and gatherers. The first Europeans arrived in Nunavut around 1500 AD. Nunavut is a frozen and white land for at least half of the year. The winters, long, dark and cold, are a heaven for sky watchers. Here the stars and the northern lights are so close you truly feel as though you can touch them. Grise Ford, which lies the northernmost of Nunavut, has a population of about 130 people and is about 2,700 miles from Ottawa. Grise Ford has 24 hours of daylight in June, and around-the-clock darkness in December! The largest community in Nunavut is Iqualit with a population of 3,600. Forty-five percent of the land area lies on the northern part of the mainland, the rest distributed among hundreds of islands.
