Updated 8-23-99 Amy's Ferret Resource Page Table of Contents Ferret Fundamentals Ferret Supplies Online Ferret Nutrition and Foods Ferret Community ... Ferret Extras Well, I've had this ferret page up since January, 1998. It was a project for the Christmas holidays. I had just acquired my first ferret, Chloe, in September of 1997. (Chloe is the ferret featured in the background of this page.) Chloe was a stray the my uncle found in his front yard. Honest! I put this page together because I did a lot of research to learn about how to best care for my new pet and I wanted to put the best sites I found all together in one spot. I get a lot of email thanking me for my work on this site and offering wonderful suggestions. If you have a favorite site that I missed, PLEASE send an email to me.
If you've been a regular visitor to my site you may have noticed that I stopped all updates during the summer. I'm ready now to talk about why. Chloe died this summer. I took her to the vet as soon as I noticed that she was ill. They said that she was dehydrated, and admitted her to the "hospital" and began giving her fluids, but she died a couple of days later. It was really hard for me to deal with her death. She's the first pet I've lost in a long time. Anyway, the point is that I'll need your help to keep this page up to date. I haven't been reading the Ferret Mailing List, or checking the newsgroup. It's been too much of a reminder of Chloe. So I haven't been hearing about the great new websites that I'm sure are going up. If you know of one, please let me know. If you made it this far in my explanation, I want to thank you for listening. And, I hope, understanding. Amy

25. Fast Food Finder -- General Overview
From the office of the Minnesota Attorney general But, nutrition experts pointout, fast food is often high in calories, sodium, fat and cholesterol.
http://www.olen.com/food/book.html
Fast Food Facts
From the office of the Minnesota Attorney General D id you know there are more than 300,000 fast food restaurants in the U.S. Why is fast food so popular? Because it is convienent, predictable, and fast. Fast food has become a part of the busy American lifestyle. But, nutrition experts point out, fast food is often high in calories, sodium, fat and cholesterol. This does not mean fast food is bad. But it does mean you should fit fast food into a balanced, healthy diet. To help you make fast food choices and be an informed consumer, the Minnesota Attorney General's Office has developed the guide Fast Food Facts, which the Food Finder is derived from. Included are the calorie, fat, sodium and cholesterol counts of menu items from popular fast food restaurants, based on the companies' own nutritional analyses. Below are some basic facts to help you make nutritional comparisons with this guide. C alories On the average, to maintain desirable weight, men need about 2,700 calories per day and women need about 2,000 calories per day. It is not well understood why some people can eat much more than others and still maintain a desirable weight. However, one thing is certain to lose weight, you must take in fewer calories than you burn. This means that you must either choose foods with fewer calories, or you must increase your physical activity, preferably both. F at Research shows that eating too many high-fat foods contributes to high blood cholesterol levels. This can cause hardening of the arteries, coronary heart disease and stroke. High-fat diets may also contribute to a greater risk for some types of cancer, particularly cancers of the breast and colon.

I found your address on the dietitian's web page. I recently discovered jicima and absolutely love it chopped up raw as a snack during the day. I'm trying to find out what its nutritional qualities are and am coming up short. Could you tell me any resources where I can find what vitamins and minerals are contained in this Mexican Root?
I have included a table below with the nutrient content in 1 cup (130 gms) of raw jicama. One cup of sliced raw jicama has about 40% Daily Value vitamin C and 16% of your DV for folacin . Otherwise, it is negligible in other vitamins and minerals. FYI, it is low in calories and mostly carbohydrates

Flawed Appetite Suppression Gene Found in Obese Binge Eaters
- March 19 - A mutation in a gene related to appetite suppression has been linked to binge eating in obese people. The finding could someday lead to better weight- loss weapons for people who have had little success fighting the battle of the bulge, researchers say.
Investigators found that a particular gene involved with the signaling of suppression of appetite was abnormal in obese binge eaters. In the study, melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) mutations occurred in roughly 5% of morbidly obese people, all of whom reported having been diagnosed with binge eating. The findings appear in the March 20 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
People with binge-eating disorder frequently eat huge amounts of food over a short period of time until they feel uncomfortable or even sick. Unlike the similar, but distinct, eating disorder bulimia nervosa, people with the syndrome do not purge, take laxatives, or over-exercise after bingeing. The National Institute of Health estimates that 2% of people in the United States suffer from binge- eating disorder, but a much higher percentage of obese people - as many as 70% - are believed to be binge eaters.
In the newly published study, an international team of researchers assessed the prevalence of three distinct genetic mutations in 469 severely obese patients. In ...

    What is a Vegan?
Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. Vegans, in addition to being vegetarian, do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.
    Why Veganism?
People choose to be vegan for health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons. For example, some vegans feel that one promotes the meat industry by consuming eggs and dairy products. That is, once dairy cows or egg-laying chickens are too old to be productive, they are often sold as meat; and since male calves do not produce milk, they usually are raised for veal or other products. Some people avoid these items because of conditions associated with their production. Many vegans choose this lifestyle to promote a more humane and caring world. They know they are not perfect, but believe they have a responsibility to try to do their best, while not being judgmental of others.
    Vegan Nutrition
The key to a nutritionally sound vegan diet is variety. A healthy and varied vegan diet includes fruits, vegetables, plenty of leafy greens, whole grain products, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

Healthy Diet Basics The Basics Day-to-Day Tests Treatment ... To the Diabetes Center
Contrary to what you may have heard, there is no "diabetes diet." The foods that are good for controlling your blood sugar are good for everyone. Several components of your diet including the amounts of carbohydrate, fat, and protein that you eat affect your blood sugar levels. So to keep your blood sugar levels normal, you need to make healthy food choices, exercise regularly, and take the medicines your doctor prescribes. Eating a properly balanced diet can help you:
  • Maintain a healthy weight or lose weight, if you are overweight.
  • Prevent low blood glucose reactions
  • Reduce your risk of health problems caused by diabetes, such as heart disease and high blood pressure.
  • Control your blood sugar levels.
  • Control your cholesterol levels.
