Obesity Drugs, Diet Pills and Weight Loss Products
Truly effective obesity drugs have yet to be developed. While prescription medication is available for weight loss, most only produce modest weight loss (between 5 to 25 pounds), and few can be used for longer than a few months. Obesity drugs are not the one-stop solution many people hope they will be. Prescription weight loss products must be combined with dietary and lifestyle changes to keep weight off.
Prescription medications for weight loss are not available to everyone with weight problems. Doctors tend to prescribe them only in cases of severe obesity, or if extra weight is causing additional health problems.
Meridia and Appetite Suppressants
By far the most common types of prescription diet pills are the appetite suppressants, a family of drugs that includes Meridia (sibutramine) and Adipex-P (phentermine). Appetite suppressants increase the amount of serotonin and catecholamine in the brain. The two chemicals are responsible for both mood and appetite. At sufficient levels, they reduce hunger and give you a feeling of fullness.
Most appetite suppressants can only be used for short periods: weeks, or sometimes months. Meridia is an exception, and can be prescribed for up to a year. Meridia's safety for longer periods than a year has yet to be determined, and claims of serious side effects, including possible heart disease, have been made.

Diet Tip—Close Your Eyes
Janet Raloff How many times has your resolve to eat prudently been sabotaged by the sight of a buffet table, Mom's Thanksgiving specialties, or pastries on the dessert cart? Just because a plate is full of food doesn't mean one has to finish it all. For many of us, new data show, listening to the way our bodies signal they've had enough may require taking our eyes off that plate for a meal or two.
There's no question that the mere look of certain foods can seduce us into eating at least a bit more. Indeed, most food advertising is based on precisely that premise. What many of us may not realize is that food's eye appeal may subtly encourage overeating at each and every meal. It starts by encouraging us to put too much food on our plates. Then, if we aren't lucky, we may subconsciously feel compelled (thanks to early behavioral conditioning by our parents) to finish each meal with a "clean plate." A team of Swedish researchers has investigated the impact of even an ordinary food's visual appeal and shown that it's enormous. How did the scientists discover this? They blindfolded study volunteers, all obese, who then chose to eat one-quarter less food—with no loss in satisfaction.

Why Is Obesity A Growing Problem in America?
Joslin Diabetes Center's New Obesity Section Head Sheds Light on Expanding Problem
[Boston, MA, August 2001] — The statistics have been reported in all the major news magazines, on the nightly news and in newspapers from coast to coast. Overall, adult men and women are about 8 pounds heavier, on average, than they were 15 years ago. According to the National Institutes of Health, over 100 million Americans — or about 60 percent of the adult population — are overweight. As many as a third are considered "obese," a term that in general is applied when a person is 20 percent or more above their ideal body weight. According to Joslin Diabetes Center's new chief of the Section on Obesity, Eleftheria (Terry) Maratos-Flier, M.D., there is much for scientists to learn about the underlying role of genetics and environment in obesity and other factors to explain why we as a nation are gaining so much weight now. "In the last five years there have been tremendous changes in how scientists view obesity. The long held view that obesity is caused simply by overeating and weak willpower has begun to change as we have learned about other factors that control weight," says Dr. Maratos-Flier. "We now understand more about the role of the brain, in particular the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that seems to regulate in part how much we eat."

Medications That Promote Weight Loss
Most available weight-loss medications are "appetite-suppressant" medications. Appetite-suppressant medications promote weight loss by decreasing appetite or increasing the feeling of being full. These medications decrease appetite by increasing serotonin or catecholaminetwo brain chemicals that affect mood and appetite. In 1999, the drug orlistat was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an obesity treatment. Orlistat works by reducing the body's ability to absorb dietary fat by about one third.

Diet and Exercise Dramatically Delay Type 2 Diabetes: Diabetes Medication Metformin Also Effective
At least 10 million Americans at high risk for type 2 diabetes can sharply lower their chances of getting the disease with diet and exercise, according to the findings of a major clinical trial announced by HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "In view of the rapidly rising rates of obesity and diabetes in America, this good news couldn’t come at a better time," said Secretary Thompson. "So many of our health problems can be avoided through diet, exercise and making sure we take care of ourselves. By promoting healthy lifestyles, we can improve the quality of life for all Americans, and reduce health care costs dramatically." The same study found that treatment with the oral diabetes drug metformin (Glucophage®) also reduces diabetes risk, though less dramatically, in people at high risk for type 2 diabetes.

Studies Show Soft Drink Consumption by School-Aged Children Is Not Linked to Obestiy, Poor Diet Quality or Lack of Exercise www.ceresnet.org The studies were based on analyses of data from two national surveys: Soft drink consumption is not linked to adolescent obesity, challenging many misconceptions. In addition, our study confirms the importance of social exercise programs and team sports in the prevention of obesity in teenage girls. As educators, we need to stress the vital role of physical activity for all students, not just the best athletes chosen for the varsity sports teams. According to our analysis of the CSFII database, there is, in fact, a statistically significant, very small but positive association between soft drinks and calcium consumption. In other words, 2- to 20-year-olds who drink carbonated soft drinks consumed slightly more calcium than similar aged kids who did not drink carbonated soft drinks. We need to emphasize ways to boost calcium intake from low-fat milk, fortified beverages, high-calcium foods, or a supplement.

Key Gene Discovered for Obesity and Diabetes
Gene is an attractive target for new therapeutics to treat insulin resistance and obesity
For immediate release: Wednesday, November 20, 2002
Boston, MA- A team of researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, led by Gökhan Hotamisligil of the Department of Nutrition and collaborators Lufen Chang and Michael Karin from University of California, San Diego, have identified the gene JNK (c-Jun Amino-terminal kinases) as the key component in interfering with insulin sensitivity in the metabolic pathway for obesity, obesity-induced insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The discovery identifies a new target for therapeutic drugs for both obesity and diabetes. The research findings appear in the November 21 issue of the journal Nature Obesity is closely associated with insulin resistance and is one of the leading risk factors for type 2 diabetes, both affect more than 50 percent of the US population. Little has been known about the molecular mechanisms between these two metabolic diseases. Both are associated with a wide range of inflammatory molecular activity in fatty tissue. These actions activate the JNK that interfere with insulin sensitivity. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs after age 40. People with this type of diabetes do not produce adequate amounts of insulin for the needs of the body and/or cannot use insulin effectively.

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/now/feb8/
Along with a well-documented obesity epidemic in the US, there is a twin epidemic of type 2 diabetes that now afflicts approximately 16 million Americans, and counting. Frank Hu New England Journal of Medicine In their latest paper published in the February 5 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine , Hu and colleagues firmly implicate a "western" diet, one familiar to many Americans, in the diabetes epidemic. Diabetes is a disease centered on the hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas and helps the body use sugar for energy. There are two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. People with type 1 diabetes, formerly known as juvenile-onset diabetes, are generally diagnosed as children or young adults, and they cannot produce insulin. People with type 2 diabetes do not produce enough insulin and/or they cannot use the hormone effectively. However, type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. In fact, Hu says that approximately 90 percent of all cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented if people changed their eating, drinking, exercise and smoking habits. Diabetes is an insidious disease. The illness can rob people of their sight (diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness cases in the US), create serious foot ailments that lead to amputations, increase the risk of heart attack or stroke by four to six times, and cause kidney failure that, in turn, forces people to use dialysis machines to survive.

Obesity Testimony to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Susan T. Borra, RD, President, American Dietetic Association
May 21, 2002
Lifestyles that support and sustain the maintenance of a healthy weight, for both individuals and the population as a whole, are a major focus of the American Dietetic Association and its members. The rapid rise in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among all segments of the U.S. population is of grave concern as the health and quality of life of those afflicted plummets and health care costs and societal burdens continue to soar. Obesity is a complex disease state. Its definition must be evidence-based and appropriate to each segment of the population characterized. Modifiers such as age and ethnicity must be considered as general parameters for the U.S. population are established. Not everyone who falls outside the upper limit of normal for defined parameters is obese even though their body weight may be higher than is recommended. We must be sure that weight reduction is promoted for those in whom weight loss would be of benefit. Individuals who make healthful food choices the majority of the time, who are physically active / physically fit, and at low risk for the development of diet-related disease should be urged to maintain the weight and lifestyle that is best for them.

    Weighing In on Obesity
FoodReview finds ERS researchers "weighing in" on a critical public health issue—the growing epidemic of Americans who are overweight and obese. The lead article takes a look at the American diet—typically too high in added sugars, refined grains, fats, and calories. Other articles examine the relationship between caloric intake and obesity, individuals' misperceptions about their weight status, the link between fruit consumption and body weight, and the cost-effectiveness issues raised by Federal interventions to reduce obesity. Another article looks at the use of emergency food pantries by U.S. households.

Obesity is a major cause of the overall loss of energy experienced by so many people.

The National Institutes of Health states it flatly: "Obesity is a leading cause of heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and even cancer."

THE PROBLEM OF OVERWEIGHT IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
    • In 1999, 13% of children aged 6 to 11 years and 14% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years in the United States were overweight. This prevalence has nearly tripled for adolescents in the past 2 decades. Risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, occur with increased frequency in overweight children and adolescents compared to children with a healthy weight. Type 2 diabetes, previously considered an adult disease, has increased dramatically in children and adolescents. Overweight and obesity are closely linked to type 2 diabetes. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This increases to 80% if one or more parent is overweight or obese. Overweight or obese adults are at risk for a number of health problems including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer. The most immediate consequence of overweight as perceived by the children themselves is social discrimination. This is associated with poor self-esteem and depression.

Most Ayurvedic doctors feel that Ayurvedic medicines used in weight control are not 'Diet Pills' in the true sense 'coz these diet pills are nothing more than amphetamines (reduces appetite) or fenfluramines or diuretics and laxatives which produces illusory weight loss by causing water loss. These pills are likely to produce anxiety and depression.
The Ayurvedic approach to drugs in general is quite different from what we've been used to. Herbal supplements can be of great benefit in weight control without the negative side effects of conventional drugs. According to Ayurveda, herbs are really a link between the body of a given individual and the larger environment of the world, or even the universe. Herbs are essentially manifestations of light. By ingesting the plant in the form of herb, you are accessing the cosmic power of the universe in a tangible way. Go to Top
