Chapter 6 THE ETHICS UNDERLYING SOCIAL STRUCTURE * Some Ethical Concepts Defined * Philosophy Underlies Society * Foundation of Law * Stateolatry ... * Forgiveness Thoreau might have written only yesterday about our government today. What makes his commentary so timeless in its application is that he saw beneath the superficial manifestations of government to its underlying principles of operation. What is important is to define the condition toward which the human community should be advancing, to set the social goals toward which the men and women of good will should strive, to identify the general relationships that should exist between human beings, to produce a schematic for civilized life, a set of instructions. This is the intent of my writings on Ethics. * Miscellaneous Ethical Topics See reference Doris Gordon against Wendy McElroy for For Ayn Rand's view see: The Objectivist Newsletter Feb 1969 The Objectivist Forum Jun 1981 * Ethics as Black-and-White Moral principles are requirements of man's survival proved by reference to the most fundamental aspects of his existence and to the deepest premises of philosophy. They are life-or-death absolutes. But while the standard and the principles of ethics (and morality) are black-and-white, as black-and- white as are the laws of nature, the personal judgments, choices and actions through which an individual implements those abstract principles are matters of degree.

Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand

Objectivism:The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (OPAR) is the only comprehensive treatment of Ayn Rand's philosophy. One of the OPAR site's most popular features is the excerpt section with its wide selection of passages from Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand that cover a diverse range of issues — from the nature of philosophy certainty , and the causes of emotions , to topics like justice, capitalism , and sex . When you read OPAR, you will understand how these seemingly disparate topics are, in fact, interconnected.
The Ominous Parallels

Is the freest country on earth about to become a totalitarian dictatorship? What were the factors that enabled the Nazis to seize power in pre-war Germany? Do those same conditions exist in America today?
These are the questions raised — and answered, with frightening clarity — by Leonard Peikoff, Ayn Rand's intellectual heir, in his powerful book

A Guide to the Philosophy of Objectivism
David King
Who the Hell is David King?

It is my intention to present an introduction, from the perspective of a scientist, to the ideas of Objectivism, a guide to other presentations of these ideas, and some applications of the ideas to important problems. Here you will find a rather motley mosaic of subsections, each generated from whatever sources of information I have encountered and each analyzed as best I can from within the context of my three-decade study of Objectivism.
In order to promote the maximum dissemination of the ideas, I have decided to place all my writings into the Public Domain. I grant permission to anyone to use my writings, or any parts of them, in any way that may help to further the spread of reason and freedom in our society.
MyBook is an ongoing project for me as I add new ideas and revise old ideas in a continual attempt to make a better presentation. I would appreciate being notified of errors of any kind in these writings, or of any statements that could be clarified so as to make a better presentation.

The Benefits and Hazards of the Philosophy of Ayn Rand: A Personal Statement
by Nathaniel Branden, Ph.D. ( NathanielBranden@compuserve.com
Abstract: For eighteen years I was a close associate of novelist-philosopher Ayn Rand whose books, notably The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , inspired a philosophical movement known as objectivism. This philosophy places its central emphasis on reason, individualism, enlightened self-interest, political freedom and a heroic vision of life's possibilities. Following an explosive parting of the ways with Ayn Rand in 1968, I have been asked many times about the nature of our differences. This article is my first public answer to that question. Although agreeing with many of the values of the objectivist philosophy and vision, I discuss the consequences of the absence of an adequate psychology to support this intellectual structure focusing in particular on the destructive moralism of Rand and many of her followers, a moralism that subtly encourages repression, self-alienation, and guilt. I offer an explanation of the immense appeal of Ayn Rand's philosophy, particularly to the young, and suggest some cautionary observations concerning its adaptation to one's own life. This article is reprinted from the Journal of Humanistic Psychology , where it appeared in issue number four of volume twenty-four in the Fall of 1984 on pages thirty-nine through sixty-four. It is an adaptation of a speech first delivered at the University of California at San Diego on May 25, 1982, which is available on

(Metaphysics and Epistemology) "Axioms: The Eight-fold Way" This article examines the history of thought on the nature of axioms in human knowledge, then focuses on the role of axioms in Objectivism. Dual Foundationalism and the Core of the Objectivist Logic For several years, I have been at work on a book, the primary focus of which has been the Objectivist Theory of Logic. Although I certainly intend to continue with this work, I have decided that it is time to begin to share some of the results which I have arrived at with those who may find the subject a matter of interest. "The Problem of Universals" One of my own articles.
(Ethics) "'My Life and My Love of It' - Comments on Objectivist Ethics" is a large, well-written defense of the Objectivist Ethics, focusing principally on how a survivalist interpretation of the standard of value (i.e., "dominant-end ethic") may, if properly understood, achieve all the richness which others seek when introducing a flourisher interpretation of of the standard of value (where numerous values are regarded as being "constitutive" of the primary end). Written by Bryan Register, this article is presently being hosted by The Philosopher's Den of UT-Austin , a website run by the university's student philosophy club.

An Introduction to the
The Objectivist Community
by James H. Yoke
Objectivism is a reality based modern philosophy founded on Aristotle. It was argued and expanded in the 17th and 18th Centuries but refurbished, finished and named by Ayn Rand in the 20th Century.
The Objectivist Community is a highly readable 200 page introduction to the Objectivist philosophy. The philosophy is founded on the principles first stated by Aristotle about 350 BC. Francis Bacon(1561-1626), René Descartes(1596-1650) and others of their time argued, clarified and made more universal the principles of Aristotle. Those principle were and are the foundation of all our scientific and technological development of the past 500 years. In the middle of the 20th Century, Ayn Rand named the system "Objectivism" and extended the principles. Based on reason, logic, the perception of the senses, and the nature of mankind, she explained how Objectivism provides a highly moral ethic and a benign economic and political philosophy. An Introduction to the Objectivist Community explains the philosophy and proposes a church or club-like community of advocates. There they learn to live an exuberant and fulfilling life of truth, honesty, and integrity in this, the Real World.

Smith's article on Rand's philosophical predecessors, reprinted with the permission of the author. Footnotes omitted below may be found in the original article. Ayn Rand was at once a philosopher and a professional intellectual who wished to transmit ideas to a broad audience. Furthermore, she was a market intellectual. Like the Sophists of ancient Greece, she sold her ideas in the intellectual marketplace; and, like those unjustly maligned teachers, she has incurred the wrath of the establishment. As a market intellectual, Rand addressed the nonacademic masses, using vigorous and lively prose. She believed in the ability of the average person to deal with basic philosophical issues. This should count in Rand's favor, but more often it is used against her. She is dismissed as a "popularizer"—rather like Plato's attack on the Sophists. Plato distrusted the average person's ability to discern philosophic truth, so he assailed the Sophists—itinerant teachers of wisdom—who sold their wares to all comers. Perhaps modern philosophers agree with Plato's assessment; if so, such elitism is their problem, not Rand's.

To read Part II, click here The least original part of Rand's philosophy is her political theory. Indeed, she says little that was not said many times over by Classical Liberals—advocates of natural rights, free markets, and limited government—during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Here, more than elsewhere, many parallel quotations could be placed alongside passages from Rand. I shall confine myself, however, to a few representative passages. Conditions of existence Let's begin with Rand's defense of natural rights: Rights are conditions of existence required by man's nature for his proper survival. If man is to live on earth, it is

The Holy Sixth Century Rationality and philosophy were discovered and invented around the early 500s BC in eastern Ionia. Concomitant with these wondrous creations were much more pleasure, happiness, ambition, and hope in life for all the new Greek men of reason. Once consistent systematic rational thought became possible, and somewhat the norm, old-style mythology became un-credible and unserious. All the traditional polytheistic gods like Zeus, Athena, and Apollo immediately died out in the hearts and minds of the educated elite and ruling aristocracy altho' not for the low, vulgar, ignorant, sentimental, superstitious, but largely irrelevant masses. Virtually everyone high and low reacted and adapted to this radical new situation in a variety of ways. Many did so, unfortunately, in standard Hegelian Dialectic fashion with the creation of rationality's and philosophy's opposite and antithesis: the mystery cults. Altho' few today realize it, all contemporary religions are just old, tired, lame, sorry, post-reason mystery cults which have been lightly adapted and updated. The essence, heart, and "soul" of this mystery cultism and "religion" both today and always is
