Philosophy of Objectivism
by Leonard Peikoff
This 12-lecture course presents the essentials of Ayn Rand's philosophy and stresses their practical significance for each individual's life. Referring to these lectures, Ayn Rand stated in print: "Dr. Peikoff's course is the only authorized presentation of the entire theoretical structure of Objectivism, i.e., the only one that I know of my own knowledge to be fully accurate."
NOTE: Ayn Rand actively participates in the question periods of each of the last eight lectures.
"This course on Objectivism was originally given in 1976, with Ayn Rand's endorsement and in her presence. But it has now been superseded by my book Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand
My book recapitulates the 1976 course, but its formulations and logical structure are immeasurably superior. I regard my book and not this course as the definitive statement of Objectivism.
Despite this, I am making the original course available for purchase — for several reasons.

Utdrag fra 'vaskeseddelen': Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand is based on a lecture course given by Leonard Peikoff in 1976, entitled "The Philosophy of Objectivism." The lectures were attended by Ayn Rand, who helped prepare them and also joined Peikoff in answering questions. Ayn Rand said of these lectures: "Until or unless I write a comprehensive treatise on my philosophy, Dr. Peikoff's course is the only authorized presentation of the entire theoretical structure of Objectivism that is, the only one that I know of my own knowledge to be fully accurate."

Objectivism is Ayn Rand's
Objectivism starts at the beginningwith reality. It is based on the fundamental principle that reality is ob jective, not
sub
jective, that the things man experiences are real, that his mind can learn about the world, can grasp what's real, only by using his reasoning mind. Thus Objectivism opposes faith, religion and every form of mysticism.
Ethically, Objectivism differs from most other philosophic systems because it holds that each individual has a moral right to exist for his or her own sake, and opposes any notion that morality consists of selfless service, whether to a neighbor down the street or to a spirit in the sky.
Politically, Objectivism upholds individual rights and capitalism. Visit the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) The Rational View is an online periodical that applies the philosophy of Objectivism to political and cultural issues.

Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand
What is Objectivism?
The greatest philosopher of the 20th century, and perhaps of all western civilization since Aristotle, was Ayn Rand (1905-1982). Beginning as a novelist, she wrote the classics The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged . In the course of writing these, she honed and developed her personal philosophy, which found its strongest expression in the lengthy speech by John Galt in Atlas Shrugged . Following the publication of Atlas Shrugged , which Rand regarded as her magnum opus, she turned to non-fiction and wrote volumes of essays further defining her philosophy, which she named: Objectivism When asked once to define Objectivism "on one foot," Rand responded:
  • Metaphysics: Existence exists
  • Epistemology: Reason
  • Ethics: Egoism
  • Politics: Capitalism
  • Aesthetics: Romantic Realism
This is a very brief and very unauthoritative (but fairly user-friendly) explanation of what she meant:
Metaphysics: Existence exists
Metaphysics is simply the branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of reality. Existence exists means that things are what they are, and not what we might wish them to be. We can change things, but only within objective rules. "Nature, in order to be ruled, must be obeyed." Existence exists seems simplistic, but you'd be amazed at the number of people who don't accept it. From extreme examples, such as loony-toon philosophers who claim that there is no reality, only our perceptions, to the more prosaic example of people who want to increase government funded projects, while at the same time demanding lower taxes.

My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.
Atlas Shrugged Objectivism is the philosophy of Ayn Rand who called her philosophy, "a philosophy for living on Earth." At it's core are the values of reason, laissez-faire capitalism, and individualism. It has effected thousands of intellectuals and inspired political ideas and changes. Objectivism was responsible in large part for the formation of this country's third largest political party, the Libertarian Party and effected numerous people including Alan Greenspan and Charles Murray. Miss Rand's fiction works include We the Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged and her non-fiction works include The Virtue of Selfishness, and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal. Atlas Shrugged , according to a poll conducted by the Modern Library is second only to the Bible in terms of it's influence on Americans, but is first in terms of popularity, the second most popular is the Fountainhead , while her other two fiction books are also among the top 10. Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand

by Leonard Peikoff Ayn's philosophy recognizes and places the thinking mind of Man - reason, consciousness, logic - in the topmost position of importance in the life of every person. She discusses what thought is, how it relates to the things of the world around us, and establishes a clear system enabling one to create their own values and meaning. The only flaw in Ayn's approach is her assumption that thinking people will only consider their "selves" as the most important factor - and her resultant over-emphasis on "selfishness" and what critics incorrectly call "ego-gratification". This is a minor flaw though compared to the usefulness of the rest of her philosophy. Anyone desiring to "learn how to think" should get this book. Values are important. In fact they are necessary to a successful life. Without values one travels through the course of life without a guide, without direction, and without meaning. Ayn clearly shows how every person makes their own meaning. If you read this book and applied it you would be a different and better person.

by Ayn Rand This book contains a great rebuttal of B.F. Skinner's book Beyond Freedom and Dignity
and another on the government's sad support of behavioral psychology. These two essays alone are worth the price of the book! Customer Comments hahaha@thebends.com from Albion, MI, August 26, 1999
Rand's best non-fiction

Though I enjoy Rand's fiction considerably more than her excessively hyperbolic non-fiction, this is undeniably good stuff. Once you separate the precise reasoning from the loony exaggerations, you have a terrific introduction to objectivism and philosophy in general. Contrary to previous tirades, some of which have been cut and pasted onto all of her book review areas, this book is full of original ideas (I'd really like to know who else preaches individualism like this, otherwise); it punctures many of today's warped worldviews and is quite readable. A Brief Biography By: Psyche Ayn Rand was born on February 2, 1905, in the city of Saint Petersburg, Russia ( My Years with Ayn Rand , 61) and died on March 6, 1983, in New York, USA (403). "Ayn Rand" was not her birth name; her first name was Alice and her last name was Rosenbaum . She adopted the name "Ayn" from a Finish writer and "Rand" shortly after arriving in America from her Remington-Rand typewriter (61). Rand decided to become an author at the age of nine and "everything [she had] done" was directed towards that goal. Rand attended college in Europe, where she took history as her major subject and philosophy as her "special interest." The first she took "in order to have a factual knowledge of men's past, for [her] future writing" and the second "in order to achieve an objective definition of [her] values" ( Atlas Shrugged Though born in Russia and educated in Europe Rand considered herself an American "by choice and conviction" and came to America in 1926 based on her moral premises; believing it to be "the only country where one could be fully free to write." She came alone and found the transition difficult at first, having to take odd jobs to earn a living until she could make a financial success with her writing ( Atlas Shrugged , 1075). She achieved this with the publication of her second novel
