Is there a good general introduction to Remote Sensing on the Net?
The CIESIN Thematic Guide to Remote Sensing is an excellent introduction at http://www.ciesin.org/TG/RS/RS-home.html CCRS have a beautiful set of annotated images (of Canada) on their pages, at http://www.ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca/ccrs/tour/toure.html . This presents a number of images - chiefly Landsat and SPOT - together with explanations of what can be seen in them, and why particular features appear the way they do. Lareef Zubair, Editor. Update on Colombo Observatory Handover An agreement to handover a two-acre parcel of the Department of Meteorology in Colombo-7 to the British High Commission for office buildings (as reported in the last issue) has shocked many. This agreement had been reached by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the British High Comission as a "government to government deal" according to the British High Commission. The land transfer is still to be finalized. The Treasury Secretary has stated that he went ahead with arrangements, at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since no one protested. The Director of Meteorology has stated that he did not protest, as it was a "government directive". However, Thirty eminent scientists and engineers have just released an appeal against the move. Various other professional societies, government consultative bodies and related groups are also considering action on the matter. See Below.

    The American Microscopical Society
    Fall Newsletter, December 1997
    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Though the members of the Executive Committee of the American Microscopical Society are widely scattered in their domiciles, the need to see after the business of the Society does not subside between annual meetings; and so it has been during 1997.
The ad hoc Editorial Review Committee, chaired by John Sullivan, recommended the reappointment of Dr. Vicki Pearse as Editor of Invertebrate Biology for a second three-year term. This committee recommended further the appointment of a Co-editor for Invertebrate Biology to "divide the labor" of the editorial office; Dr. Patrick Reynolds of Hamilton College was recommended for the position. The Executive Committee approved the reappointment of Dr. Pearse as editor and the appointment of Dr. Reynolds as Co-editor.
The ad hoc Finance and Budget Committee, chaired by Burt Bogitsh, presented budget proposals for FY 1997-1998, FY 1998-1999, and FY 1999-2000 along with several recommendations. Though the Executive Committee voted in favor of the need for a budget and financial plan for the American Microscopical Society, a recommendation to put in place the budget proposed for the current fiscal year failed. Consideration of this matter is to be continued as an agenda item at the upcoming meeting of the Executive Committee in Boston; your prior input communicated to me or other members of the Executive Committee will be appreciated.
In late July, the bound journal collection of the Colorado State University library was destroyed by flooding. Responding to a general plea for items to help replenish their collection, the American Microscopical Society offered to donate one each of our available back issues of the Transactions of the American Microscopical Society and Invertebrate Biology to their library; we currently have 147 different back issues in our storage inventory. Colorado State University has accepted with deep gratitude our offer, and as soon as the basement of their library is again habitable and their elevators become functional, the back issues will be shipped from Allen Press.

The new curriculum-development effort, Project CUES (Constructing Understandings of Earth Systems), will be based upon the modular Investigating Earth Systems program recently released by AGI. CUES will feature more than 50 "profiles in Earth system science." These inquiry narratives will be written by scientists about the fundamental questions they are exploring and the ways they use Earth science to tackle issues that confront society. In addition, CUES will feature 40 guided inquiry investigations, extended student-driven research projects on local issues, as well as four videos that provide additional profiles of Earth scientists at work. CUES is planned to be available commercially for the 2005-2006 school year by It's About Time Publishing of Armonk, NY. For more information, visit the AGI web site, http://www.agiweb.org/education

Learning occurs through many avenues at SDSU: classes, student organizations, on-the-job training, enrichment programs, etc. There are many University-wide opportunities available to students (athletics, band, debate, fraternity/sorority, etc.). Students are encouraged to consider all avenues to ensure a broad education during their time at SDSU. The Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences offers many unique opportunities for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. Personal learning occurs through personal growth and a sense of well-being that come when giving something back to your "community". All of the community service programs highlighted in this website are available for students to volunteer for professional experience. Some volunteer experiences can become paid experiences under the right circumstances. In addition, there are student major organizations that one should join, for the networking with other professionals in your field is crucial to employment opportunities following college. In addition, the faculty have been creating endowments to support student scholarships which are presented in this section. Dietetic Internship (SDSU AP4 Program)
