World Data Center (WDC) for Oceanography is one component of a global network of discipline subcenters that facilitate international exchange of scientific data. Originally established during the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58, the World Data Center System functions under the guidance of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). WDC for Oceanography, Silver Spring, is collocated with, and operated by, the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). In accordance with principles set forth by ICSU, WDC for Oceanography acquires, catalogues, and archives data, publications, and data inventory forms and makes them available to requesters in the international scientific community. To improve user access, the WDC provides copies of data it receives to its counterparts, World Data Center for Oceanography (Obninsk, Russia) and World Data Center for Oceanography (Tianjin, China). Oceanographic data contributed to the WDC become automatically available to scientific investigators in any country. Thus, there can be no restrictions or limitations placed on data exchanged through the WDC system. However, for certain types of data, the exchange of inventories of available data in a WDC subcenter may be considered acceptable in lieu of the transfer of the actual data sets.

How deep is the ocean? Where can I get bathymetry data and bathymetric maps?
The depth of the ocean is remarkably variable, from the surf zones at the world's beaches to the deep ocean trenches. The deepest point in the ocean is generally believed to be in the Marianas Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean at approximately 36,160 feet [11,021 m], according to the Rand McNally Atlas of the Oceans (1977). A bathymetric map depicts the topography of the ocean floor. Bathymetric maps - as well as the digital bathymetry data from which they are produced - are distributed by the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center's Marine Geology and Geophysics Division

    • Oceanography is the general name given to the scientific study of the oceans, with an emphasis on their character as an environment. It is divided in terms of the basic sciences into physical oceanography, biological oceanography, chemical oceanography and geological oceanography. The basic goal of oceanographic study is to obtain a clear and systematic description of the oceans, sufficiently quantitative to permit us to predict their behavior in the future with some certainty. The history tells us that the first group have started to study the oceanography is the ancient egyptiants all over the world. Please if you are new visitor or member, share us now and forever on our active message board and chat room where you can ask professors and they will answer you the best accurate academic answers or at least you can see and share the online discussion. Oceanography The research in the field of oceanography is focusing on development of models and applications of satellite remote sensing, taking into account the needs of the institute, other governmental agencies and county administrative boards.
Co-operation with other research groups on a national as well as an international level is frequently taking place. The objective is to produce and use knowledge on processes, parameterisations and forcing functions, applicable in forecast, diagnostic and climate models as well as in analysis procedures for remote sensing imagery. Below is given some fields of interest the group are presently engaged in

    Ice in the Baltic Sea.

A NOAA image of the northern Baltic Sea from March, 17, 1997 showing land fast ice as yellow and pack ice as pink.
In the operational work, satellite information and surface observations are integrated with these models through the ICEMAP system, an advanced computer system for map analysis and presentation. Within the Swedish-Finnish winter navigation research programme remote sensing applications are developed for ice mapping, ship routing and icebreaking operations mainly in the Baltic, but occasionally also in the Arctic region. Work is concentrated on NOAA/AVHRR and SAR imagery from ERS and Radarsat satellites. These images are a major data input to the daily ice chart, which also is used for initialisation purposes of the forecasting model.

San Diego State University provides preparation for ocean-oriented careers by offering marine-related coursework and oceanographic experience within regular degree programs in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Geography, Geological Sciences, Natural Science, and Physics. Master's degrees with specialization in marine problems may also be earned in these departments. The Ph.D. degree is offered in biology, chemistry, and ecology, jointly with the University of California. Degrees in general oceanography or marine studies are not offered by the University. The Coastal and Marine Institute coordinates work in the area of marine studies and provides special supporting services to the faculty, staff and students, including student advising, assistance in research and publication, operation of the University's marine laboratory at Mission Bay, and a boat operations program. Courses in general oceanography are offered by faculty from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Geological Sciences. Advanced coursework and research in geological and physical oceanography are conducted in the Geological Sciences Department. An option in marine geology is offered as part of the undergraduate major in geological sciences, and the Chemistry Department offers work in chemical oceanography. Advanced courses and research in biological oceanography, marine biology, marine botany, and marine zoology are conducted in the Department of Biology. Similar marine-related coursework and research are offered in the Departments of Economics and Geography and in the College of Engineering. Students who require advising in these areas should inquire at the Coastal and Marine Institute. (See section of this catalog on Academic Organization, College of Sciences Research Centers.)

MD is a search tool for finding oceanographic datasets available worldwide. While its focus is on datasets related to global change, this includes a great many datasets of general oceanographic interest. MD accesses information on the holdings of many data centers, which makes it a logical place to start before exploring individual data centers.
Note to students at URI GSO Bay Campus:
GSO Technical Report No. 95-1, entitled "Drinking from the Firehose: Global Change Datasets Available through Internet" provides guidance on the use of Master Directory.
    • The Oceanographic Society is developing a Distributed Ocean Data System, (DODS) to aid in the identification and sharing of oceanographic data, and which will be integrated with Master Directory.

The Four Major Areas of Oceanography
Physics (Physical Oceanography) Oceanographers understand that the physics of the ocean is what controls the rest of the conditions in Earth's oceans, the chemical, biological and geological processes. Because they are so important, we will be looking at the water movements and other physical aspects of the oceans, especially waves, tides and the major ocean currents. Chemistry (Chemical Oceanography) We will be looking at the chemicals that fill the ocean basins...especially the water (where the mouse comes in), the salts and the gases, explore where they came from and how they play roles in marine organism and human activities.
Geology (Marine Geology) This portion looks at the oceanic container and especially what it is made up of, how it was and is being formed and how that has caused big changes on Earth over geologic time.
Biology (Marine Biology) This image of a Noctiluca (a dinoflagellate that in swarms of millions and causes a reddish color and a "glowing" of the sea) illustrates how our look at the biology of the oceans in this class will be confined to discussions of how life relates to the chemistry, geology and physics of the oceans; or vice-versa... This Noctiluca was "captured" from a mysterious red mass observed on a voyage of the Univ. of Washington's
