oceanography 1 general Information oceanography 1 is a survey of thematerials, processes, and systems that affect the world ocean.
http://www.piercecollege.com/usr/leesc/Ocean_1/oc1gen.htm
Oceanography 1 General Information
Oceanography 1 is a survey of the materials, processes, and systems that affect the world ocean. Part 1 The Ocean Floor and Plate Tectonics The first portion of the course covers the relationship between Earth's interior structure and Earth's surface; the differences between continents and ocean basins (including why ocean basins are lower than continents); major features of the ocean floor; and the theory of plate tectonics. Part 2 Ocean Sediment and Ocean Chemistry The second major portion of the course deals with ocean sediments and ocean chemistry and the close relationships which exist between these topics. The effects that the atmosphere, land, and the ocean crust have on the chemistry of seawater are examined (which also involves a discussion of why the ocean is salty). The relationship between seawater chemistry and life is discussed, involving the effects that life in the ocean has on seawater chemistry, as well as the effects that ocean chemistry have on marine life. Part 3 How the Sun Affects the Ocean (Including Ocean Circulation) The third major part of the course is an examination of how the sun affects the ocean how solar radiation affects ocean temperature, salinity, seawater density, and the behavior of sound in the water. The effect that seawater has on the transmission of sunlight is also discussed. The relationships between atmospheric heating (the ocean is a major supplier of heat to the atmosphere), atmospheric circulation, and wind-driven ocean circulation are examined (including El Nino and La Nina), as is the relationship between surface climate and the deep water circulation of the ocean (thermohaline circulation).
