    Build an Ocean
    Construct simple three-dimensional models with your students that encourage questions and investigations into major ocean processes. The models give students the opportunity to explore and make sense of basic physical ocean phenomena. Emphasis is put on direct experience with familiar materials to develop science, math and technology concepts. Middle and high school students find the models easy to assemble. Each session has a specific focus. Models include: shoreline features, waves, wind and weather Build an Ocean I (Waves and currents) Models include: Upwelling, Downwelling, Ekman spiral, and various wave forms.
    Build an Ocean II (Coastal features)
    Models include: Barrier Island, Longshore current, Rip current, Wave refraction, and Beach with Sea Cliff.

    • TAO Observing Array - The TAO observing array of 70 buoys placed across a wide area of the Pacific Ocean gives access to real-time data about surface winds, sea surface temperature, subsurface temperatures to depths of 500 m, upper ocean velocity data, surface air temperature and relative humidity. This data can be viewed through various visualizations, plots, maps and animations, generated according to your specifications.

    Celebrate the Year of the Ocean
    Eighteen activities for students to practice their math, geography, science, and language skills while learning about the world's oceans! In a resolution adopted in 1994, the United Nations declared 1998 the Year of the Ocean . In accordance with the year's theme, "Our Common Heritage," the UN resolution noted that:
    • the oceans, seas, and coastal areas together form an essential component of the global life-support system.
    • oceans represent a significant source of food, energy, minerals, and usage with significant economic potential.
    • effective management of the uses and resources of oceans depend on improved access to information, public education, and scientific awareness.
    • an international effort to protect the marine environment will require an understanding of the interaction between oceans and people.
    The purpose of adopting the resolution was to recognize the importance of Earth's oceans and their resources and to educate and encourage governments and individuals to accept responsibility for sustaining them. The following activities can help your students contribute to that effort.

    Did you know that:
    • oceans cover almost three quarters of the earth's surface;
    • oceans make up over 95% of our planet's total water resources;
    • oceans produce half of the world's oxygen and absorb 50% of the carbon dioxide released by human activity;
    • Canada has the world's longest coastline measuring nearly 244,000 kilometres;
    • the islands in the Canadian Arctic form the world's largest archipelago;
    • eight of the provinces and both of the territories border salt water;
    • Canada has more lake area than any other country; our inland waterway is the longest in the world;
    • the Great Lakes are the largest freshwater system in the world and our three distinct ocean environments represent the most fascinating ecosystem diversity on the earth.

    Chesapeake Bay Lesson Unit Grade 4 - This is a complete Chesapeake Bay study unit created by the Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Va. It includes sections on the history of the bay, native peoples, and early settlement. Much of the site is devoted to lessons and information dealing with the marine environment in the bay. There's also a section on shipbuilding and commerce. This site could easily form the basis for an interdisciplinary study of an American coastal community or ecosystem. The Dinosaur Unit Grade 2 - This is a second grade level look at dinosaurs which includes projects in math, art, reading, and other disciplines. The web pages include examples of completed projects as well as descriptions of how the various unit elements link together.
