Lesson Plans for Oceanography-
Compiled by Ellen Pratt
Lesson Plans -A great website for K-12 teachers. Full of lesson plans in every subject area! Select "oceans + lesson plans" for some related links. Reef Ball Foundation- This website brings you to an international nonprofit foundation that provides information on reefs. Educational resources are available, as are grant opportunities. Oceanography Theme Page - This site provides links for teachers and students to study many aspects of oceanography. -The Fish Tank provides information for teachers who are interested in setting up a classroom aquarium, plus many sources of information on fish, related literature, lesson plans, fishing, diving, arts and crafts, etc.! OCEANS -There are subject and theme links here, as well as internet projects, virtual tours, scavenger hunts, and student sites. Educational Links - This website brings you to SEARCHLight, which stands for Southside Embracing All Religions and Cultures in Homeschooling. Once here, choose "Science" and then either "Oceanography," "Secrets of the Ocean Realm," or "The Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide." Ocean Murals 99 Overview The four to six day unit provides a way for elementary teachers to include other subjects, such as science and math, into their art lessons. Through information and exploration of the ocean its inhabitants, the students will build a foundation of knowledge.

Oceanography in the News
This is a selection of stories, subject to the following rules. First, I don't guarantee close daily coverage of everything that happens (because I have a job to do apart from maintaining this Web page). Second, the site has to be generally accessible. (Journals like Science make their pages accessible only to people who have paid a subscription to the written version.) Third, to make loading faster I keep only a couple of months in this page: for archived stories, go to the end of this page. Fourth, I try to choose sources that tend to keep their pages accessible for more than two weeks over those that do not. Similar pages on the Geology Department web site are

Back again...It's like I never left
by CAPT(S) Jeff Best, Senior Detailer There's no place like home; there's no place like home Poof!!! What happened!!! I tapped my heels together three times and Is it possible? I'm back in the detailer seat. It really is a pleasure and an honor to be the community manager for the best community in the Navy. I would like to thank RDML Thomas Donaldson for giving me this tremendous opportunity. I never in a million years thought I would come back to this job, but I guess RDML Donaldson wants me to get it right this time. Also, special thanks to CAPT Phil Renaud for the great turnover. It's almost as if I never left. I'm blessed with a great assistant, LCDR Eric Trehubenko. He has just completed seven straight years of overseas duty (Ooops, I think I started him out in Guam seven years ago!) He has some big shoes (well not literally) to fill behind Brian Brown. Eric's off to a great start and is already much further along after one month than I was after a year. If you haven't talked to him, please give him a call.

The maps depict the sea-surface height anomaly (departure from mean) for the 10-day period March 25, 2002 to April 4, 2002 (Jason-1 repeat cycle 8; Topex/Poseidon repeat cycle 351).
Jason 1's oceanography mission to monitor global climate interactions between the sea and atmosphere reached another major milestone this week with the successful handover of day-to-day operations from the French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. With the handover, JPL is now responsible for around-the-clock real-time monitoring of Jason 1's health and status, and for generating and uploading weekly stored command sequences to the spacecraft. These sequences contain data for mission planning, payload commanding, navigation, ground station acquisition and routine maintenance functions. The French Space Agency's Satellite Control Center in Toulouse, France, will continue to perform spacecraft engineering and navigation tasks. Both organizations will be jointly responsible for processing mission science data.
