Introduction to DHI
DHI covers the following activity areas:
  • Harbours and coastal structures Coastal hydraulics and littoral processes Oceanography and marine environment Offshore structures and pipelines Rivers and inland hydraulic engineering Water resources Urban drainage
Within each of these seven areas of activity, three basic methods or disciplines are used:
  • Field measurements and real time monitoring of physical and chemical parameters Physical models, usually at a reduced scale Information technology and numerical models (computer simulation)
DHI is also one of the GTS institutes affiliated to the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV). The Academy appoints the boards of directors of the institutes, normally from the academic world or potential clients of the institutes and approves the by-laws governing the work of the institutes. DHI's vision is to be the world leader in selected technologies pertaining to coastal zone management, water resources management, flood management, and the urban infrastructure.

    A practical focus on species
    To achieve this 20-year goal, however, will require a fundamental shift in the way that information about marine species is collected, collated, and evaluated. The key taxonomic work should be done within the context of ongoing research programs focused on important questions in ocean ecology; it should not be relegated to an increasingly sparse, museum-based taxonomic community. Techniques to identify planktonic species in real time, for example, should be based on advances in understanding of species identity coupled with technological applications that automate identifications and collate data over space and time. New information and automated technology from these individual groups should be made available to the community of ocean ecologists, allowing new taxonomic discoveries to be added incrementally to the pool of species information. In order for this flow of information to occur, such taxonomic advances should be supported explicitly within the framework of ongoing ocean surveys. As these studies are completed, follow-up taxonomic studies will become vastly easier, provided that there is centralized support for on-line management and updating of the database. Within ten years, inclusion of such taxonomic expertise should be a normal feature of all major research programs in biological oceanography. The 20-yr vision is that automated, real-time identification of the major species important in marine ecosystems monitored over fine spatial and temporal scales will revolutionize understanding of the biology of the oceans. Major technological developments will need to include faster genetic techniques, interactive computer identification tools, and a system of probes that can monitor oceanic biota. Major operational changes required to achieve these goals include support of careful taxonomy associated with ongoing projects and the dissemination of this information in a rapid and practical way.

    Protocol of intentions signed after Russian-NATO seminar
    In the end of the Russian-NATO seminar that closed on Wednesday in St.Petersburg, head of the Russian defense ministry's navigation and oceanography department Anatoly Komaritsyn and deputy chairman of the NATO military committee vice-admiral Malcolm Irvin Fages signed a protocol of intentions.
    The protocol states that the goals of the seminar - exchange of experience in navigation, hydrographic and hydrometeorologic support in rescue operations at sea - have been reached.
    According to Fages, Russia and NATO are in the final stage of working out a broad framework agreement.
    In his turn, Anatoly Komaritsyn said that the signed document would allow experts to prepare materials on the issue to include them in the general agreement between Russia and NATO.

    Current Crisis Overseas Crisis Awareness Keeping Informed About A Crisis: When a crisis occurs abroad involving large numbers of U.S. citizens, such as a natural disaster, transportation accident, civil or political unrest or a terrorist incident, the Department of State and the U.S. Embassy abroad utilize a variety of means of communicating with the American public, including the Internet. Monitoring the Consular Updates on the Internet: Monitor the Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs home page and the home page for the U.S. Embassy in the foreign country for up-to-date information about the crisis. Communicating With Families of U.S. Citizens Involved in a Crisis: Families in the United States whose U.S. citizen relatives abroad are directly affected by the crisis can also communicate with the Department of State through our Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management at (202) 647-5225. If a 24-hour task force or working group is established in the Department of State Operations Center to manage the crisis, you will be directed to the Task Force at (202) 647-0900. Letting Your Family Know You Are Okay: If a crisis occurs in a country you are visiting, contact your family in the United States to reassure them regarding your safety.
