Purpose Statement: Facilities Norfolk, Virginia is one of seven major cities comprising Hampton Roads , one of the world's largest major seaports. Norfolk is the center of this Eastern Virginia region and the hub of the world's largest natural harbor. It is a major center of research and development and a home for extensive scientific and technological activities in marine science, aerospace technology, ship design and construction, advanced electronics and nuclear physics. NASA-Langley, the birthplace of the space program, is located in Hampton, Virginia. First established in 1969 as the Institute of Oceanography, the Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences moved into a new building on the Old Dominion University campus in Norfolk in 1997. New facilities contain laboratories for biological, chemical and geological studies. In 1991, the Commonwealth Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography began operation in a building near the campus and houses all of the physical oceanography laboratories.

Links SCIENTIFIC-TECHNOLOGICAL POLICY IN CANTABRIA REGIONAL STRATEGY FOR TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN CANTABRIA While remaining aware that the innovation picture is wider than regional and national boundaries, it is also the case that the regional level is particularly favourable for promoting public policies for support for innovation, because of the proximity of regional authorities, sensitive to local culture and business needs for innovation, and the ability to unite and coordinate the efforts of businesses, support organisations and the regional authority itself to define public activity aimed at promoting innovation, entirely in line with the actual situation in each area. It is for this reason that the Cantabrian Government was motivated through SODERCAN to develop a Cantabrian "Regional Innovation Strategies - RIS" study with European Commission support, followed by formulation of the Regional Strategy for Innovation on the basis of the analysis and conclusions of the RIS. The Cantabrian Government uses this to pursue its ultimate aim of creating and consolidating employment and sustainable economic growth by improving the innovative capacities of the business sector in Cantabria.

The emphasis will be on non-mathematical approaches. The basic concepts of science and technology, emphasizing the unifying concepts of science will be developed around the history and nature of science. The development of inquiry processes scientists use in discovery of new knowledge will be stressed. In addition, perspectives will be presented on science in personal and social issues, in order to build a base for scientific literacy. Critical thinking, in scientific contexts, using case studies of competing hypotheses in the history of science, as well as examples from borderline science and medicine, religion, and politics, will be a major focus.

The Bren School offers the Master's of Environmental Science and Management (M.E.S.M.), a professional degree, and the Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Management, a research-oriented degree. The Bren School's mission is to play a leading role in researching environmental issues, training research scientists and environmental management professionals, and identifying and solving environmental problems. In the past, the diverse disciplines addressing environmental issues have developed independently. Now, research and teaching have reached the point where significant progress requires weaving together elements of formerly disparate disciplines and blurring traditional boundaries. The School brings together a range of natural and social scientists to research important environmental questions. Moreover, because environmental issues arise in legal, political, and business contexts, the School's faculty also brings together law and business professors who provide perspectives from professional arenas. The Bren School continues to engage in a campaign of faculty recruitment and will appoint several new faculty members over the next couple of years.
