Using the Internet to Reflect on Teaching Linda Bennett University of Missouri-Columbia lb@missouri.edu A s a new resource for education and a rich environment for learning, technology has influenced the nature of teacher education. The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE 1994), the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE 1998), and the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS 1997) have provided guidelines for the integration of technology into teacher education. The standards provide a framework for infusing technology into social studies but the Internet has to be woven into curriculum, teaching strategies, and materials within teacher education. In the Social Studies in the Elementary School course, the students are required to submit weekly entries to an online reflective journal, http://www.coe.missouri.edu/~esse/reflective.html The purpose of the journal was for the students to reflect on social studies education or the activities of the course. The nine teachers participating in the DVD Program here at HMS are in good company- this program is being implemented with groups of teachers across the country in preparation for an even larger DVD give-away by HHMI. The HMS group has met twice already, and will meet two more times in the fall to share ideas and get feedback on their products.
