I learned so much while I was there, and had a wonderful time. But let me start at the beginning. In January, Pastor Lisa asked me if I'd be interested in going on a trip to Kenya. I immediately said yes ! Around the same time, Pastor Storm was asking my mother what she thought of my going to Kenya. (I don't think that she immediately said yes, though.) I quickly filled out the necessary forms and then anxiously waited for a reply from one of the SONKA Global Partnership Committee members. After waiting for a few weeks, I found out that I had been selected for an interview. By the time of the interview, my stomach was tied into knots. However, I got through the interview, and found out the next day that I had been selected for the trip. I was ecstatic. The next week was a jumble of suitcases, important and official documents, getting spelling errors on my plane ticket corrected, my parents stressing to me how important it was that I always have my passport, money, and visa with me at all times (suffice to say, I never lost them once, but did come very close to losing my retainer in a restaurant at one point), and finally packing up everything.

Much of the positive development was directly related to three changes that allowed Boston FOCUS to provide a stronger and more solid base for ministry in the region: Sherry Morris was hired in September as Regional Staff to work with Dave Drake; Roberta Valentino, a parent of a Roxbury Latin student, came on board as administrative assistant in February, and a new office was found in Wellesley, larger and more convenient to our staff and more central to our activities.
