Riley Addresses Ohio Statewide School Facilities Dialogue CINCINNATI, OH JULY 13, 2000 - KnowledgeWorks Foundation (formerly the Conlan Education Foundation) and convened today a landmark statewide meeting focused on Schools as the Center of Communities. U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley delivered the keynote address to more than 200 participants representing school districts, community organizations, and state agencies from across Ohio. Schools as the Center of Communities: A Statewide Facilities Dialogue was held at Cincinnati's Mayerson Academy for Human Resource Development. "We are at a point in time when we need to be thinking creatively about how we redesign and modernize our nation's school building and to recognize in some very new ways that our schools can be centers of community for the entire community," U.S. Department of Education Secretary Richard W. Riley said. "When you involve the community early on, they invest in the school in a very different way. They bring good ideas to the table, and very often find ways to save money and share resources." More than half of Ohio's schools are 50 years old or older. To remedy the situation, Gov. Robert Taft has proposed a plan to spend $23 billion on new school construction over the next 12 years. The state expects to allocate $10.2 billion to school construction, matched by $12.9 billion in local dollars. KnowledgeWorks Foundation plans to contribute an additional $1.5 million over the next three years through grants rewarding districts that match facility projects to community needs.
