Introduction to Teacher Education and Licensure Standards
Mount Union College Academics Academic Departments Education Author: Administrator Publishing date: 08.13.2002 17:01 In 1992, the State Board of Education established a thirty-four member Standards Review Committee, broadly representative of the education and lay communities, to consider needed revisions to develop a new system of teacher licensure that would be performance based and grounded in the knowledge and skills necessary for effective practice. Two years later, the Standards Review Committee and the Ohio Teacher Education and Certification Advisory Commission finalized their work and submitted recommended standards to the State Board of Education. The State Board accepted the standards in principle by resolution in July 1994, and sought needed legislative changes from the General Assembly, enacted in Senate Bill 230. After receiving written and oral public testimony on the proposed teacher standards, the Board passed a resolution to adopt the standards in October, 1996. The General Assembly passed a concurrent resolution of approval of the standards in November, 1996. The legislative adoption of the resolution established the effective date of January 1, 1998, for chapter 3301-24 of the Administrative Code (Teacher Education and Licensure Standards).

American Diabetes Association approves Living Well with Diabetes
KennedyTownship - Ohio Valley General Hospital was awarded an Education Recognition Certificate by the American Diabetes Association for the Hospital's quality diabetes self-management education program called Living Well with Diabetes.
The recognition of the program extends from August 2002 through August 2005. The ADA believes that this program is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.
The Association's Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education programs. Programs applying for Recognition voluntarily submit to a rigorous review process by experts in the field of diabetes who evaluate each program on its ability to provide patients with a comprehensive individualized program. The designation also means that the Hospital has a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management.
According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 17 million people or 6.2% of the population in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 11.1 million have been diagnosed, 5.9 million people are not aware that they have the disease. Many will first learn that they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications - heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness and nerve disease and amputation.

Team Up for Mall Walkers Program
Kennedy Township - Kennedy Township - Pittsburgh's Ohio Valley General Hospital and The Mall at Robinson have teamed up to sponsor a Mall Walkers Program.
Sign-ups will be held the third Wednesday of every month from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the lower level of The Mall at Robinson near Sears, and will provide an overview of the program, flexibility testing and free blood pressure screening.
According to Andrea Harris, RN, community education coordinator at Ohio Valley, a Mall Walking program is beneficial for many reasons. "Mall Walking is easy since no special exercise equipment is needed nor skills are required. You don't need to plan for the hot or cold weather or rain, deal with pollen, unfriendly dogs, uneven pavement or mosquitoes," says Harris. Plus, she adds, it is better for seniors or those with health issues that shouldn't be exercising outdoors in extreme temperatures.
The Mall's walking hours are Monday - Saturday 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Only the doors at Entry K (lower level at Sears) will open for the first hour and all remaining doors will be open for the last two hours.
