Introduction Reports and Articles Links Information about Grants Introduction As in many other cities, Dayton, Ohio faces its share of educational challenges. Far too few students, particularly low-income and minority students, are graduating from high school, and many of those who do are not prepared for college or for today's jobs. Dayton parents and community members are hungry for education reform and for new school options. A recent survey ( "Dayton Education in 2001: The Views of Citizens and Parents" ) published by this foundation shows that Dayton private and charter school parents are far more satisfied than public school parents with the academic program, discipline, safety, and teacher quality at their child's school. More than half of private school parents give their child's school an "A" grade, as do 42% of charter parents, but just 23% of public school parents award this top mark to their child's school. According to the survey, two-thirds of Daytonians favor maintaining and/or expanding charter schools. Eastridge June 2002 - Feature The Effectiveness of a Professional Development Web Site for Entry-Year Principals The Northeast Ohio Principals' Academy Entry-Year Program (EYP) was one of five regional programs that received funding from the Ohio Department of Education for 1999-2001 to develop policy recommendations for state licensure of beginning principals, effective fall 2002. Each program had two university-based co-directors, and the Northeast Ohio region also used a 20-person coordinating committee consisting of superintendents, principals and representatives of higher education. All regional programs were charged to develop, pilot test, evaluate and offer recommendations for sound and workable licensure procedures. To encourage creativity, the leaders of the programs were directed to work independently. In this project, a diverse group of 30 entry-year principals, recommended by their superintendents, and 30 active or retired principal mentors from a 14-county area received training in the Ohio Administrative Competencies. These competencies were based on the "Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium Standards for School Leaders" (1996), available online at

Coordination and Management Plan PROJECT SUMMARY Many components in food have been identified as therapeutic substances that prevent certain cancers. Initial studies of ellagic acid in rodents by Dr. Gary Stoner have shown significant prevention and reduction of certain cancers. Preliminary studies by Funt, Bash and Schwartz have shown the highest level of ellagic acid in unripe raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. Different cultivars of these small fruits contain different levels of ellagic acid. We propose to do research and education on ellagic acid and determine the benefits of ellagic acid to human health. We will grow berry cultivars and cultural methods to achieve the highest level of ellagic acid. We will investigate methods to extract ellagic acid. We will test processed products for cancer prevention in rodents and, ultimately, in humans at the Arthur James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute. Fifty-five percent of OU-COM graduates are practicing in primary care, the highest percentage of any medical school in Ohio. Primary care-focused curriculum The college admits 100 students annually to its four-year program.
