General Information about the Graduate Program
    Degrees offered
The primary degree offered in the Linguistics Graduate Program is the Ph.D. degree in linguistics. Students applying to the program are evaluated as potential Ph.D. students, and if admitted, are enrolled directly in the Ph.D. program. It is not necessary to earn a master's degree, either from Ohio State or another university, before entering the Ph.D. program. (For admission requirements, see Admission
Under certain circumstances, students already admitted to the Ph.D. program may also earn an M.A. degree in linguistics, and the degree requirements for the M.A. apply in that case. But the department does not normally accept applicants for the M.A. degree alone.
    Focus of the Graduate Program
The Ohio State University linguistics program has a strongly theoretical orientation, which is to say that our research is largely concerned with the development of a general theory of human language as well as detailed accounts of the structure, development, and variation of individual languages.
The character of the Ohio State linguistics program is also that of a "pure science" rather than an "applied science": linguistic phenenomena are studied for their own sake and as an aspect of human cognition, rather than being examined for their practical application in fields such as second language education. Experimental laboratory research in speech production, speech perception, the mental processes of sentence understanding, etc. are an important feature of many areas of study in our program. The department also has a rapidly growing focus in computational linguistics.

Success Story: Ohio Department of Education
    Improving Education with Business Intelligence
    Download Story

Achieving academic excellence is not a benefit generally associated with the MicroStrategy Business Intelligence Platform™, but the State of Ohio uses it to do just that.
Providing easy access to primary and secondary public school performance data, the Ohio Department of Education is giving parents, teachers, administrators, legislators and journalists one click access to a profile of the state’s education system. The resulting insights can help parents become more involved in the education of their children and drive positive changes for future generations who will be educated in Ohio’s public school system.
One way to improve education is to accurately diagnose problems with the current system. Knowing what problems exist helps officials target appropriate resources to fix them, and knowing what works provides a model to emulate. That is how the Ohio Department of Education sets its agenda today, and it relies in part on MicroStrategy software to give parents, teachers, administrators and legislators an accurate profile of the state’s public education program.

Other areas of research involving institutions of northeastern Ohio include cancer, nuclear power and biomedical engineering. Many secondary schools are regarded as leaders in education, with numerous annual merit scholarship winners, and are recognized for offering a complete curriculum ranging from slow learner and modified to upgraded and honor.
