Geography
From the dunes on Lake Erie to the gorge-cut plateau along the Ohio River, from which Ohio takes its name, the land is fairly flat, with some pleasant rolling country and, in the southeast, small rugged hills leading to the mountains of West Virginia. Before the coming of settlers to the state, it was covered with miles of virgin forest, but today only vestiges of the trees that helped to build the many cities remain. Columbus is the capital and largest city. Cleveland is the center of the state's largest metropolitan area. Other major cities are Cincinnati Toledo , and Akron Sections in this article:

... Programs Geography The Tutorial Program in Geography offers the exceptional undergraduate an individualized course of study leading to the bachelor of science degree in geography. In this curriculum a student can pursue the field more intensively than in a conventional geography major. Here one may delve into areas of special interest and engage in actual geographic research. Since the Honors Tutorial College has no distribution requirements for graduation, a student admitted to the program may help to design a course of study especially suited to his or her special interests. Eligibility Applicants are selected by the Department of Geography and the Honors Tutorial College on the basis of superior academic ability and the potential for self-motivated undergraduate study and research. A high school class rank within the upper 10 percent, high scores on standardized tests (preferably a minimum combined score of 1300 on the SAT or an ACT composite score of 30), two teacher recommendations and a personal interview all help to create a successful applicant. The review process is sufficiently personalized to allow admission for students who do not perform well on standardized tests but demonstrate exceptional aptitude in other ways. A student may apply up to the beginning of the sophomore year. Curriculum This honors program provides a strong foundation in physical, cultural and economic geography and then allows the student to pursue interests in regional, topical or applied fields at his or her own pace. At the heart of the program is the tutorial. Under the guidance of a faculty tutor the student investigates topics from selected professional literature and discusses them at weekly meetings (tutorials) of about 90 minutes. Evaluation criteria and writing assignments are set by the tutor. Honors students typically spend about a third of their time (and earn a comparable amount of academic credits) in tutorials. The remainder of the time is devoted to collateral courses, laboratories and electives.
