Dispatch Staff Reporter An Obetz youngster might get a library card sooner than he expected, thanks to a new option for checking out videotapes at the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Caleb Adir Waldren, 10, browsed through videos with his brother and mother at the Main Library last week as a reward for enduring a shot at a doctor's office. He and 8-year-old Jonas ended up with cartoon videos and a Little Rascals episode all checked out on their mother's card. "They don't even have their own cards because I monitor everything they watch,'' said their mom, Vina Waldren. "I want to know what they're getting.'' Now, she's considering a card for Caleb before he starts school in the fall so he can check out books and videos during field trips to the library.

06:11 PM May. 20, 1997 PT A group of heartland parents concerned that their children might see sexually explicit material while Web surfing in Ohio public libraries were hoping Tuesday to get some tight virtual shutters bolted onto library Net terminals. But with state Finance Committee action Tuesday, the terminals were still shutter-free as a bill that would have required the state's 245 public libraries to install blocking software was amended to allow local boards to create their own software policies.

"Apart from the issue of local control, our main concern was the effectiveness of the technology," said Mike Mooney, aide to state Senator Roy Ray, the Republican chairman of the panel that passed the bill. The bill's original provisions , passed in March, stipulated that the Ohio Public Library Information Network create guidelines including the "use of technological systems to select or block, and the requirement that public libraries obtain Internet access exclusively through the OPLIN" by mid-August.

This project is being done by Mary Ellen Armentrout, Interlibrary Loan Librarian, at Otterbein College. This project is a 4-year study of Ohio's Carnegie Libraries which began in the summer of 1996. The focus of the study is Carnegie Library architecture. The state of Ohio has been divided into four sections for ease of travel. The southern counties were visited during the summer of 1996 and the northeastern counties in 1997. North central Ohio libraries will be done in 1998 and northwestern Ohio in 1999. The End Product... This will be a travelling exhibition which travels to the Carnegie buildings around the state. Depending on funding this could start as early as Spring 1998 or as late as the year 2000. University of Akron Press has agreed to publish a book based on these photographs. A slide presentation is also given to groups for a small fee to publicize the project and teach awareness of Carnegie libraries. Contact

MORE for Ohio –- Statewide Resource Sharing
    Introduction
The day has dawned in Ohio where any library user can request an item from any Ohio library and check it out from the user’s home library whether that home library is a public, school, academic, or special library. The technology is available; the next step is committing to resource sharing. During the last year, OPLIN, INFOhio and the State Library of Ohio have laid the groundwork to connect Ohio libraries in a statewide resource sharing network. They have obtained funding to purchase software tools, selected a system vendor as well a delivery vendor, and tested the system with three representative libraries.
Now Ohio libraries can bring their patrons MORE an acronym that represents Moving Ohio Resources Everywhere, and also a statewide resource sharing network that brings library patrons more resources, more books, more music, more videos any circulating item in a library collection. If a patron searches her own library catalog for an item and comes up short, she can choose to re-execute her search in library catalogs statewide and request the item. The item will be shipped to the home library of the patron for checkout. The patron returns the item to the home library, where it is shipped back to the owning location.

    Libraries as ISPs
by Kate Williams An email service from your library? It's a technology your patrons will value. Libraries have been inventing the networked society in lots of ways, from OPAC on up to today's digital collections and services. Alongside the dot.coms and the ecommerce buzz are lots of valuable public resources online. Patrons value these resources and the people and institutions that build them. A prime example in Ohio is that many patrons turn to the library rather than AOL or some other service when they dial up to the Internet. This typically includes a personal email account that can include in it the library's name—very good publicity, when you consider how far and fast email can travel. In Toledo, patrons use their library card to purchase dial-up Internet service for $75 per year. Across the Maumee River, libraries throughout Wood County make the same offer—by means of a partnership with the all-volunteer Wood County Freenet, which connects to the Internet pipelines of Bowling Green State University and houses networking equipment in various libraries. Who else is offering this? How does it work and what good is it? Via a survey—on the Internet, naturally, and with 60% of Ohio libraries responding—and then a series of conversations with librarians, we found out.
