CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION
TEACHER LICENSURE PROGRAM
The primary goal of the Career and Technical Education Teacher Licensure Program is to develop professional career and technical educators who will foster the development of students by preparing them for a high performance workforce that is in constant transition. The program prepares teachers in planning, executing, and assessing instruction by developing skills necessary to organize content, create a positive learning environment, exercise appropriate teaching methods, and continue to reflect and develop professionally. Technical Education Teacher Handbook (pdf format) Program Prerequisites There are several prerequisites to enrolling in the Career and Technical Education Licensure Program. This program is designed for teachers who have been hired by school districts or correctional institutions that must now secure teacher licensure. The prospective student must have a high school diploma. The student must be sponsored by a hiring school district or correctional institution. The individual will complete a VE-36 Qualification Evaluation Form. These institutions will then complete a State of Ohio Department of Education VE-37 Qualification Evaluation form. For more information see the Ohio Department of Education Office of Career-Technical and Adult Education or to get a copy of the VE-36 Qualification Form or VE-37 Qualification Form in PDF format.

Teacher Certification/Licensure

" Hey, what's the status of my licensure application?" If you turned in your application for licensure months ago and are curious about the status of it, go to the following Ohio Department of Education web page: http://www.ode.state.oh.us/Teaching-Profession/
Teacher/Certification_Licensure/www-cert-status.asp
That site will tell you if ODE has received your fingerprint verification, the date the licensure application was received and the date the license was issued. If no information is found on that website, please call 306 White Hall at 330-672-2862. ELECTRONIC FINGERPRINTING
Now in the Insturctional Resource Center (IRC) in Room 211 White Hall
The College of Education now has the capability to provide electronic fingerprint scanning to students on a full-time basis in room 211 White Hall. Schools are increasingly requiring students to be fingerprinted before they will be permitted to student teach, and some are requiring it prior to field experience. This service allows fingerprints to be processed in no more than 48 hours, compared to 6-12 weeks with the paper/ink method. The charge to students is $20, which includes the $15 fee to BCII for the background check.

ATTENTION:  Students pursing teacher certification
(catalog years prior to 1998)
As you may know, education in the state of Ohio underwent many changes in 1998.  With the changes the Ohio Department of Education also instituted several deadlines.  One of the most important ones is that Spring 2002 is the deadline to complete the required coursework at Kent State University in order to have time to obtain a teaching certificate.  Anyone who has not applied for their certificate by that time will need to pursue a teaching license and the new standards that apply to it.  If you started College of Education prior to 1998 and are pursuing teacher certification under the old standards, you MUST be completed with the following no later than May 2002 Finish all of your program requirements
Graduate
Pass the required Praxis II tests
Have BCII, and if necessary, FBI background checks completed
Turn in your certification application to 306 White Hall If you feel you cannot satisfy all of these requirements by the end of the Spring 2002 semester, you will need to switch your major to one of the new licensure programs.  If so, please call our office at (330) 672-2862 to schedule an appointment to see a program counselor as soon as possible.

The Renewal Process
The Conceptual Framework
As part of the accreditation process, the Music Education faculty, together with the Education Council (EC), crafted a document called the Conceptual Framework. The Education Council is comprised of the music education faculty plus a conservatory dean, college dean, college faculty, public school administrator, and public school teacher. The Conceptual Framework describes the foundations on which our curriculum for teacher certification (music education) is based. The EC collaboratively created a mission statement and approved a motto for the Division of Music Education.

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.
