Board President Leadership Academy
This letter was mailed to all Board Presidents on March 20, 2003. Now, more than ever, we need effective leadership in public schools. The school board president is key to that effective leadership. That is why we are hoping you will attend the Oklahoma State School Boards Association’s Board Presidents’ Leadership Academy on April 26. This workshop is being held at the same convenient time and location as the New School Board Member Workshop – the auditorium at Metro Tech Center in Oklahoma City. To make it even more attractive, if you and your superintendent attend together, we will make a special offer of $90 for both registrations! Everything an effective school board president needs to know will be presented in this workshop. Agenda preparation, roles and responsibilities of the board president, strategic planning, public participation, policymaking and superintendent hiring, and media relations are all in the same convenient package. Experienced, expert presenters, including OSSBA legal staff, school board members, and superintendents will present information from a real-world perspective.

Boards of Education hire teachers, prepare for start of school year By KIMBERLY D. MORAVA

SNS Staff Writer Despite the summer vacation for area school children, several area boards of education held meetings July 12, and Macomb held their board meeting Monday night. Action taken for each meeting includes: EARLSBORO At their regular meeting July 12, Earlsboro's Board of Education voted to accept the resignations of several employees. The board accepted the resignation of Robin Rosser, who served as the high school principal's secretary; Larry Chesser, a maintenance worker; and Linda Chitsey, a secondary English teacher who transferred to Shawnee, said Superintendent Paul McGee. Also at the meeting, board members voted to accept the 1999-2000 student handbook, which is about the same as last year, the superintendent said. Members of the board also authorized McGee to bid on real estate property up to a certain amount per acre, he said. A lot of property on the southeast side of the school is for sale, McGee said, and in case of expansion, the property would be ideal.

Oklahomans statewide are standing up for education in support of the Feb. 12 education rally at the State Capitol, said Oklahoma Education Coalition leaders. "Scores of communities, school boards, administrators, parents and volunteers are making it possible for thousands to attend this historic event,” said Cathy Post, president of the Oklahoma Parents and Teachers Association. “This is one voice, one crisis, one common bond: children. We are asking the legislators to make education their top priority. "This has been mistakenly perceived as only a teachers' event. Saving education is everyone's issue and this rally proves that this crisis truly knows no boundaries." Common education is expected to lose $200 million this year. Higher education has lost $50 million in funding, while CareerTech has suffered $8.5 million in reductions. No Coalition member group has been spared.

Organizations with which they can work include the oklahoma State Board of education;local boards of education; the oklahoma Geography Fund; the Federation of
Oklahoma! Uncrowned Queens and the Oklahoma Centennial Celebration for 2007 For the past two years, Drs. Bertram and Nevergold have been working to catapult the Uncrowned Queens Project into national status and to export this historical/cultural and heritage model to states throughout the country. A few weeks ago, they were notified that the Oklahoma Capitol Complex and Centennial Commemoration Commission had placed the Uncrowned Queens Project on the Master Plan. It is the only project of its kind on the Master Plan. This designation identifies the project as an official Oklahoma Centennial Commemoration project. The Commission reports that: “The project was selected because of the strong partnership with the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma Urban League. Further, the project has a far reaching means of bringing recognition to African American women throughout Oklahoma who have contributed to their communities and to our state. We are pleased that the project will reach out to communities of all sizes and that it will create archives that will be invaluable to students, scholars and the public.” Further, the Commission writes: “This is a statewide centennial project that will utilize web-based technology to reach any community in the state and share a part of our unique history with anyone in the world.”
