IEA takes issue with GOP leader’s remark
(Boise, Idaho – Feb. 22) IEA President Kathy Phelan expressed outrage today over a remark made by Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating at the Ada County Lincoln Day Banquet in Boise earlier this week.
According to news accounts of the banquet, Keating spoke to more than 700 Republicans from throughout the state at the annual fundraising dinner.
“Among the comments attributed to Gov. Keating was one that especially distresses me,” said Phelan. “Keating was quoted as saying he has ‘declared war’ on his state’s teachers union.”
“IEA members and our colleagues in the Oklahoma Education Association find such speech to be frightening and the worst sort of political demagoguery, especially in today’s world,” Phelan said.
“Certainly, the governor can disagree with the organized voice of Oklahoma’s public school educators, even strongly disagree. But for a well-known public figure to put that disagreement in the context of declaring war is outrageous,” Phelan said.

She and her students have had experience dealing with acts of terror. The bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City is a memory her students live with every day. As news broke about the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., Jewell's students first wanted to know why some kids were being picked up by their parents and why those parents felt afraid, Jewell said. With students who were left behind, "We talked about fearing things over which we had no control," said Jewell. "Then we talked about not giving into fear because then they [the terrorists] win. We talked about channeling our feelings into thinking about what we could do to help. We talked about how everyone responded to us when our federal building was bombed." Eventually, the students turned their energies to talking about ideas, Jewell continued. "We could make cards," the students suggested. "We could write letters …"
