other state education agency staff in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, oklahoma, and Texas Institute for Responsive education, Northeastern University
http://www.sedl.org/rel/partners.html
SEDL is joining the Charles A. Dana Center of The University of Texas at Austin and American Indian Research and Development (AIRD), Inc., in Norman, Oklahoma, to work intensively with 60 school and district sites across the South and Southwest. SEDL staff and partners are helping schools and districts assess needs, as well as create and share the know-how to focus improvement efforts on reading and mathematics instructional programs. While SEDL brings significant expertise in reading, school change, and school-level work to the partnership, the Dana Center contributes experience in mathematics, policy, and district-level work. AIRD staff provides knowledge in working with Native American populations. Active involvement of the five chief state school officers as well as other state education agency staff in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas is essential to REL work. They are responsible for establishing the criteria and procedures for determining the performance status of schools. They also control many of the resources available in each state to support the transformation of low-performing schools into high-performing learning communities. SEDL knows that improvements at the school level will not be sustained without support from the district level. In addition, districts that learn to work successfully with one or two low-performing schools will be able to transfer the knowledge and skills to other low-performing schools.

Leadership Development Workshop

Tulsa, Oklahoma
The Northeastern Oklahoma Mensa Group's first hosting of a Leadership Development Workshop was a success by all measures. We attracted attendees from groups well outside of Region 6. Members from California, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas were here for a weekend of fun and education. Most of the out of town attendees arrived on Friday so they could get acquainted and also get rested before the workshop actually began on Saturday morning. Local group members were available to provide hospitality and assistance for the Friday arrivals. Becky Palmer greets the registrants Dick Amyx, a former chairman of the AMC (American Mensa Committee), gave the first presentation on leadership according to the Servant/Leader principle. There's more about leadership on one of Dick Amyx's web pages. Dick Amyx The program pretty much followed the pre-planned schedule with the exception that TJ Lundeen had to make a last minute cancellation. We look forward to her lively participation in the next LDW. Pam Donahoo, the Executive Director of American Mensa Ltd. came up from the national office and brought with her a nice collection of handouts and other materials for distribution among the attendees. Our local treasurer was able to grab a copy of the latest Treasurer's Handbook. Dick Amyx took a good picture of Pam doing the presentation, shown to the right.
