Oklahoma, also called "The Sooner State," is smack dab in the middle of the Heartland, USA. The name Oklahoma is from the Choctaw Nation words "okla" meaning people, and "humma" meaning red... "Red People." The largest population (250,000) of Native American Indians in the United States, with Tribal Headquarters for 39 Tribes, are in Oklahoma. The state was known as Indian Territory when the 5 civilized Tribes were forced to relocate here, during 1838-1839, from their homes in the southeast as ordered by President Jackson in what is known as the " Trail of Tears ." A treaty then swore this would be the Indians' Promised Land, "for as long as the grass grows and the water flows." However, in 1893 a choice portion of Indian Territory in Oklahoma was opened up for white settlement in one of the most bizarre events known to American History. Over 100,000 people lined up along 165 miles of the Kansas border ready to take off and stake their claims in the Land Rush . Those Federal Marshals, railroad personnel, and others who were legally allowed in the territory before the shot fired at noon, starting the race into "

The society is located in Lawton (Comanche County), OK and covers the counties of Beckham, Caddo, Comanche, Cotton, Grady, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Jefferson, Kiowa, Stephens, Tillman and Washita.
The OBJECTIVES and PURPOSES of the society are:

OGS Membership Information Special Publications OGS Queries First Families of the Twin Territories ... Online Records Purpose: The Oklahoma Genealogical Society, established and incorporated as a nonprofit organization under the laws of the state of Oklahoma in 1955, was created to bring together interested persons for discussion and exchange of information, to study research methodology, to issue publications, to collect and preserve data and to assist members with their genealogical research and writing.
Meetings: The Society's regular meetings are held on the first Monday evening of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Oklahoma Historical Soceity, Wiley Post Building, 2100 North Lincoln Blvd., Oklahoma City. The building is located at the southeast corner of the Capitol Complex. Genealogical Inquiries: Society volunteers are available to assist in answering mail requests pertaining to research in Oklahoma or Indian Territory. The charge for this is service is $15.00 per hour plus cost of photocopies. Your request should include full name of individual or names of family members, a specific date or time period (i.e. 1889-1895), city and/or county of residence and type of information desired. Please send payment for the first hour and a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with your request.

The state of Oklahoma was established as part of the United States on November 16, 1907, making it the 46th to join the union. Oklahoma ranks 19th in size* with 68,679 sq. miles of land, and Oklahoma City is the largest city. Oklahoma also ranks 27th in population* with 3,450,654 residents (2000 est.), and Oklahoma City is the state capital. The official bird of Oklahoma is the Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher, and the official flower is the Mistletoe. Oklahoma statistics obtained from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census.
