News Detail Current News Sort news by: Date Category Back Oklahoma History Center Dec-17-2001 HOK St. Louis and Beck Associates have designed the 200,000-square-foot Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. The Center will feature a limestone and granite-highlighted exterior, and will blend with the adjacent State Capitol and the Wiley Post Historical Building. Said Oklahoma Historical Society Director Bob Blackburn: "The new History Center will become a major new attraction for the community and an anchor for the redevelopment of NE 23rd Street." The curved design will embrace the Capitol building. The Center will feature 32,000 square feet of exhibit space and 19,000 square feet for artifact storage. It also will include a restaurant, a "Great Hall" that can seat 400 people, an auditorium, and a gift shop. Construction should be complete by the fall of 2003. They will use the school media center, the public library and the Internet as their resources. There are several projects that the students will be involved in that will allow for various exposure to the many themes of this unit. There are focus activities that provide needed instruction for web publishing; as well as, general introduction to Oklahoma state history. The inquiry activities will involve the students in more research and analysis. The application activities will involve the students in the actual production of their final project. For the most part only traders, official explorers (notably Stephen H. Long), and scientific and curious travelers (among them Washington Irving and George Catlin) came into the present-day state. Indian Territory Indian Territory . Their tragic removal is known as the Trail of Tears. They settled on the hills and little prairies of the eastern section and built separate organized states and communities. The Cherokee particularly had a highly Europeanized culture, with a written language, invented by their great leader Sequoyah, and highly developed institutions. Some of the Cherokee were slaveholders and ran their agricultural properties in the traditional Southern plantation pattern; others were small farmers. Near Anadarko, archeologists discovered the bones of a mammoth and several spear points. They estimate the mammoth was killed more than 11,000 years ago. The spear point was identified as belonging to an ancient group of hunters called the Clovis culture. From 500 to 1300 AD, the Spiro Mound Builders lived in an area just west of the Arkansas/Oklahoma border. Items left in burial mounds show the Mound Builders to be skilled artists. Oklahoma's written history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through this area. At that time, it was the home of the Plains Indian tribes, such as the Osage, Kiowa, Apache and Comanche. In 1803, Oklahoma was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In the 1830s, the federal government forced the Five Civilized Tribes to leave their homelands. These tribes were living in the southeastern part of the U.S. They had to walk to Oklahoma over a trail that became known as the "Trail of Tears." Many men, women and children died during this long and treacherous trip. Once these people settled here, Oklahoma became Indian Territory. Many of the Indians sided with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Old Greer County Greer County Records Old Greer County Links Veteran Memorial Wall Greer County, Texas Old Greer County, Indian Territory Old Greer County, Oklahoma Territory History of Greer County On February 8, 1860, Governor Sam Houston approved an act of the Texas legislature creating the County of Greer from the area of Young County, Texas and named for John Alexander Greer , a veteran of the Texas war for independence from Mexico. Civil War intervened for a while. Under Texas jurisdiction the county was attached successively to different organized counties until Greer was organized with a full slate of officers July 10, 1886. Greer County was part of a long-standing boundary dispute between the United States and the State of Texas. Greer County passed from Texas to Oklahoma authorities in 1896 at the decision of the United States Supreme Court. Greer County celebrated the Centennial of this decision March 16, 1996. Legal history of the land, the area that would become Greer County, began in the year 1803, Napoleon was preparing to go to war with England. France owned all the land west of the Mississippi River, and owned Louisiana which controlled both sides at the mouth of the river. Thomas Jefferson sensed the fact that Napoleon needed more money than he did this land. At that time this Government only extended west to the Mississippi River. The river was the great channel of commerce for all territory west of the Allegany mountains. It is still a vital artery of commerce clear up the Ohio to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and the Cumberland river to Nashville, Tennessee. Jefferson was not pleased with the fact that two governments had control of the river, and that France had exclusive control at the mouth at New Orleans.

HISTORY Perry is proud of its past and in remembrance of its beginning, celebrates the Cherokee Strip Land Run every year as close to September 16 as possible. HISTORY April 5th, 1887, was the date the townsite of Purcell was platted on a piece of wrapping paper. The original site, still in Indian Territory, was only four blocks and furrows were plowed to mark streets and alleys. Shortly thereafter the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway from the south met the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway from the north and the junction was completed near Purcell in 1887. Purcell was named in honor of an early director of the Santa Fe Railway, E.B. Purcell. In 1895 Robert Jeremiah Love constructed the sixty-three room Hotel Love. The Purcell Register, a territorial newspaper, reported that the building was "by far the finest hotel in the Chickasaw Nation." The building now serves as an antique shop.
