Ponca City...
Where Oklahoma Began!
Ponca City History Land Run Oklahoma History Ponca City
was created in true Oklahoma fashion during the land runs of the late 1800's. On September 16, 1893, homesteaders lined up for a race to claim one of the 160-acre farm sites in the area surrounding what became Ponca City. Early in the spring of 1893, B.S. Barnes, having heard that the Cherokee Strip was to be opened for settlement, headed for Arkansas City with the hope of building a new city in this frontier area. Barnes had sold his furniture manufacturing plant in Adrian, Michigan, desiring to make his fortune on "The Strip."
The fact that the spring was a good water source and was located on the main road to the Osage Country, caused Barnes to decide that near this point was the logical site for his contemplated city. Barnes went back to Arkansas City to announce the location of the new city and to organize the Ponca Townsite Company. On September 21st, four days after the Oklahoma Land Run, surveyors completed surveying the selected section of land into streets and lots, and the lot drawing began. And such was the beginning of Ponca City! Certificates for lots in Ponca City were sold by the Ponca Townsite Company for $2 each and each certificate was good for either one business lot or one residential lot. Over 2,300 certificates were sold. A little girl drew the cards from a box placed on Grand Avenue between 3rd and 4th streets. From these drawings attendants recorded the certificate owners' names and lot selections in large bound books. This is believed to be the first instance of a new city being started with a town lot drawing. It took two days to complete the drawings and Ponca City was born.

November 27-28, 2001 Winter Storm
The storm which brought the first significant snowfall to the area this winter evolved as a classic winter storm. A strong upper-level low pressure system tracked across the Southern Rockies into Texas before lifting northeast into the Midwest. Warm moist air was lifted up and over a strong slow-moving cold front producing freezing and frozen precipitation.

Welcome to Oklahoma Route 66!
Every Route 66 state has its own unique sights and special contributions to the history and lore (or is that lure?) of Route 66. But only in Oklahoma do the elements of buildings, roadside attractions, people and history come together in such overwhelming abundance.
Interested in cool structures? We've got many that you'll recognize from coffee table books about Route 66: the Round Barn, the Blue Whale, the Coleman Theatre Beautiful, the Warehouse Market, the Meramec Caverns Barn, the Milk Bottle Building, Totem Pole Park, the Rock Café, and on and on and on. And for those who like to photograph or explore old ruins, we've got those too.
Love old bridges? We've got Pratt bedstead, camelback Warren pony truss, modified Pratt through-truss, a brick-decked bridge and more.
Want to travel back in time and journey on the actual pavement that took Okies and Arkies west during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl years? We have a lot of original 2-lane concrete paving dating from the 1930s. Heck, we even have two stretches of 9-foot wide road that carried Route 66 traffic from 1926 till the mid-1930s!
Do you get your kicks exploring Museums? We have two fantastic Route 66 Museums and a host of wonderful county museums filled with enough interesting stuff to make your head spin.

by Greg Yort
(Written for the 25th Anniversary Celebration in 1998)
In 1973, Reverend Leroy Kerbo, Reverend Kenneth Adams and Reverend Paul Henson walked in the doors of a church building at 11th and Pesotum to ask for God's direction in the establishment of a new church. From that prayer meeting, God called for the birth of The Shawnee Oak Park Church of God. Since that day there have been many challenges faced by this church. But, through it all, the Lord has truly prospered Oak Park. The Lords blessings of prosperity can be seen throughout the history of Oak Let's go back 25 years to Oak Park's humble beginning. Oak Park began with only 20 charter members. The seating capacity of the original sanctuary was 380. There were approximately 20 classrooms, two nursery areas, a children's sanctuary, a fellowship hall and a few church offices. The sanctuary looked much different 25 years The floors were mostly tile, with red carpet on the isles and stage. The stage was smaller, with rooms on both sides. There were rock plant stands on both sides. There was no sound room. The sound was controlled from inside the pulpit. The pews were not padded or upholstered. There were double doors in the center of the West wall and in the center of the North wall. A cry room and very small bathroom were just outside the sanctuary. The old ceiling was one height, with much less lighting. The lights above the center section were arranged in the shape of a cross.

History of the Italian Festival
The first Italian Festival in McAlester was held in 1971. It was the idea of Krebs restaurant owner Bill Prichard. He and his family have operated the "world famous" Pete's Place in Krebs for nearly 60 years. The festival was to honor and prolong the Italian heritage in this area of Oklahoma. The first four years, the festival was held around Columbus Day in McAlester Chadick Park. Food was prepared in the homes of the area residents and brought to the site for the one-day festival. In 1975, the festival became a two-day affair on Labor Day Weekend, and in 1977, it moved to Memorial Day Weekend, now its permanent annual setting. The festival was held for several years on a site commonly known as Schiller's Field, on the east side of U.S. 69 By-Pass, just south of the cloverleaf intersection with U.S. 270. In 1987, the festival moved to the new county fairgrounds (Pittsburg County Regional Exposition Center), just west of McAlester (on the south side of U.S. 270). The festival has grown into one of the largest festivals in the state, and features one of the largest arts and crafts shows in Oklahoma, as well as the delicious and freshly-prepared Italian food and tributes to Italian heritage. All the labor for the restival comes from volunteers. During the two-day event some twenty thousand people visit and enjoy, or take part in the festivities, which makes the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers all worthwhile.

"History" The Church of Christ had its beginning in Anadarko about 1925, and met first in the Old Columbia Theater Building on West Broadway. The church began with 10 members, mostly women. The property used in 1965 on West Central was acquired in 1930. An old two-story house was remodeled for church use. The two story home was sold and the structure was moved off the lot. The first unit of the building at 202 West Central was erected in 1946. Two class room additions were later made to that building.
In 1964 the church purchased a two-acre building site on S.W. 6th Street, the present day South Mission. The first consistent group of elders were selected in March 1964 and the first consistent group of deacons were appointed in November of 1964. The elders were Jack Deason, James Freie, Lloyd Mitchell, and Ed Hendrix. The deacons were Harold Anglin, Kendall Dykes, and Jim Smalling.
The church purchased a residence for the minister in 1963 on London Drive in Anadarko. The first full-time minister was J. D. Rothwell who moved from Houston, Texas, to begin work with the church in September, 1963.
Preachers who served in regular work from 1925 to1965 include: C. V. Ballard, Lucius Spears, Hardy Baugh, Porter Wilhite, A. D. Tweedy, W. A. Martin, T. A. Davis, Clyde Riley, Don Mansur, George Bryan, Gene Folks, Will M. Thompson, Roy Cosgrove and Tim Watson. General State History
Although one of the youngest states in the nation, Oklahoma is a land that reaches far back in time. Oklahoma's recorded history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through the area on his quest for the "Lost City of Gold." The land that would eventually be known as Oklahoma was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Beginning in the 1820s, the Five Civilized Tribes from the southeastern United.
To settlers by holding a total of six land runs between 1889 and 1895. Settlers came from across the nation and even other countries like Poland, Germany, Ireland and Slavic nations to stake their claims. And African-Americans, some who were former slaves of Indians, took part in the runs or accepted their allotments as tribal members. In the years that followed, black pioneers founded and settled entire communities in or near Arcadia, Boley, Langston and Taft. On November 16, 1907, Oklahoma became the 46th state.

Oklahoma City History
Just a little over a century ago , the site of Oklahoma City was a grass-and-timbered land of gently rolling hills flattening out into prairie in the west. Today, Oklahoma City sprawls across 625 square miles of America's heartland. It's metro population numbers over a million - a third of the entire state's population. Oklahoma and Oklahoma City have a fascinating history that stretches back past the oil boom, the Great Land Run of 1889, the great cattle drives, the Civil War, the Five Civilized Tribes, and the Plains Indians, back before Coronado crossed the land looking for his City of Gold - back to when thundering herds of dinosaurs roamed the windy prairies. You won't find every question about Oklahoma answered here (there are libraries for that), but hopefully many of your most pressing queries can be taken care of within these pages, and the pages of the other linked websites.

NEW ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE
On January 1, 1998, Drug Busters of Southwest Oklahoma ceased to exist and pooled its resources and board members with Lawton Crime Stoppers, Inc. to form a new organization titled Crimestoppers / Drugbusters of Southwest Oklahoma, Inc. The reason for the change was to expand some services while eliminating duplication for other services. The payment schedules remained the same.
COORDINATOR AND INVESTIGATOR
Deputy Chief Michael Johnson serves as the Program Coordinator. In that capacity, he delivers monthly reports to members of the Board of Directors and approves payments for rewards in most cases. This approval is contingent upon following strict guidelines as imposed by the Boards of Directors.
Master Officer James Poindexter is the workhorse for the organization and serves as the Investigator. He call-forwards the line to a mobile phone that he carries with him when he is not in the office. After taking the information, he passes it on to the appropriate investigator or supervisor for further disposition.
At various times of the year, he can be seen delivering t-shirts for the Moonlight Walk Against Drugs or performing the duties of a spotter on one of the holes at the annual Golf Tournament. A highly motivated individual, he is an asset to the program. He can be reached in his office at 581- 3210 or on the Crimestoppers/Drugbusters phone line (355-4636).
