Distance K-12
For parents, particularly homeschoolers, distance education provides the opportunity to supplement a child's learning experience with a subject which might be out of the normal realm of expertise. For instance, if your daughter wants to take trigonometry but math was never your strong point, she could enroll in a distance learning math class. You could go beyond course supplements and use a distance program as your child's complete educational framework. Furthermore, since distance classes can either be high-tech independent studies taken whenever is convenient or a group class with a fixed schedule, you can choose which fits with your circumstances and your child's learning style.
Accreditation
Accreditation is a different animal on the K-12 level than on the higher education one. Because of the varied state regulations concerning homeschooling (or any form of non-traditional learning) accreditation isn't critical as with colleges and universities. Furthermore, most of the regionals aren't particularly equipped to handle the uniquenesses of distance primary and secondary schools. To address this issue, the regional accrediting agencies have created a new accrediting agency called The Commission on International and Trans-regional Accreditation (CITA). (You can find a list of CITA and regionally accredited K-12 schools by searching the

State Initiatives for Foreign Language Instruction
Vickie Lewelling and Jeanne Rennie
Forty states had some kind of second language mandate (for example, requiring schools to offer at least two years of a foreign language to all students). Some of these states required second language study only for advanced or honors diplomas or for college-bound students. Despite 40 states having a second language mandate, foreign language supervisors in only 27 states described foreign languages as being part of their state's core curriculathat is, having equal status with the other major disciplines. Only nine statesArizona, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Oregonincluded second language study in their core curricula at the elementary school level. Of the 49 states (all but Pennsylvania) that had developed or were developing academic content standards, 40 included content standards or competencies for foreign languages. Of the 39 states that had developed or were developing academic performance standards, 19 included foreign languages in their standards.

Education (click on any picture for a larger view) Grove Public Schools Pre-K-12 Grove schools provide a well-rounded educational program beginning at the earliest level, with early childhood (four-year-olds) and full-day kindergarten classes. The elementary school boasts a strong academic program as reflected by scores on National Achievement tests, with programs in the arts and physical education enhancing the traditional curricula. Electives in foreign language, computers, the arts, and Indian history add depth to the middle school’s core academic program. High school students take seven 50-minute courses throughout the day. The high school curriculum includes course offerings in vocational programs as well as advanced placement programs. Many enriching elective courses are offered, such as Aeronautics and Native American History. Advanced courses are offered in Anatomy and Physiology in addition to Chemistry I and II. Twenty-four units of credit are required for graduation, including three years of Math, Science, and Social Studies, and four years of English, including one year of Composition.

    k-12 Resources
Our current focus is on college level teaching, but we offer the following brief list of connections where k-12 educators can find resources. We hope in the future to expand our services in this area. Appetizers and Lessons for Math and Reason: This site offers a dozen unique appetizers to help extend the common knowledge of Math and Reason. The appetizers for logic show how to use rules and patterns, one at a time, or one after another, to obtain conclusions. These logic appetizers are math-free for the most part and can be read separately: if you wish. Below they are mixed with some appetizers for mathematics. The math appetizers go from arithmetic review problems to a brief explanation of about slopes (a calculus preview/review). Ask Dr. Math ( k-12 question-answer forum at Swathmore). K-12 students can email math questions to math majors at Swathmore, and get a solution back. The site also matains an archive of previous questions/answers. The AskERIC Virtual Library: The Computer as a Learning Partner: The Computer as Learning Partner (CLP) project provides a one-semester integrated energycurriculum teaching the physical science topics of heat, light, and sound to eighth-graders. In the curriculum, which is entirely laboratory-based (as opposed to lecture- or textbook-based), the computer is used as a tool to collect and graph real-time data, perform simulations of experiments that consume too much time to do during a class period, track students' progress in moving through the sections of the lab, and so forth. We have developed the

The Edmond Public School District encompasses 97 square miles servicing an enrollment of approximately 17,000 students. These students attend one of the thirteen elementary, five middle schools or three high schools in the system. Over 1,200 certified personnel and 650 support personnel staff Edmond’s schools. With a remarkable 16 National Merit Finalists in the 2000-2001 school year, it’s not surprising that Edmond Public Schools tested 22 percent higher than the national average for the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in 2000. Edmond SAT and ACT scores outrank the national average by 21 percent combined. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education has awarded the National Blue Ribbon to Edmond Public Schools four times since 1992. The award is based on a set of eight rigorous categories of selection criteria and is a proud achievement in the Edmond community. Special features of the Edmond school system include half-day kindergarten, consideration of children with special needs and a program for gifted and talented students. There is a great interest and emphasis on education within the community. Many civic and professional organizations are strongly involved in programs designed specifically to enhance the quality of education in Edmond. Additional choices include numerous Private Parochial and Christian schools in the area, with many offering kindergarten through 12th grade education. St. Mary’s Episcopal School and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School are located in Edmond.
