Olympic Games
Until 1998, Canada had never sent all of its best players to compete at the Olympics, yet no other nation has as many Olympic hockey medals as Canada. This is an amazing accomplishment when you consider that until very recently Canada sent over Amateur club teams and rosters of minor leaguers, university students and Amateurs to face off against elite level European professional players. For years, a major bone of contention has been the interpretation of the word Amateur in the framework of the Olympic Games. The Russians, for example, won several Olympic gold medals icing a team featuring their best of the best; names like Vladislav Tretiak, Valeri Kharlamov, Igor Larionov and Slava Fetisov fill their Olympic history. However, these players did not face off against Phil Esposito, Ken Dryden, Guy Lafleur and Mario Lemieux in the Olympic Games because these Canadians weren't permitted to play due to their "professional" status. Why the Russians weren't considered professionals when, in fact, that is exactly what they were, is totally unclear and the basis for the Canadians' dispute. This ill-will led Canada to choose not to ice a team in the 1972 and 1976 Games. For those years Canada withdrew from international hockey altogether, frustrated by the inability to properly represent the country.

Weather 02/24/2003 - Updated 12:00 PM ET Future Olympics: 2004-2014 2004: Athens Athens organizers have assured the International Olympic Committee that it will be ready to host the Games on time despite repeated delays in preparation and disputes over venue sites. Plans for a seaside multisports complex have been scrapped. Environmental groups and archaeologists have objected to the planned rowing venue, saying the project could disrupt a sensitive wetlands ecosystem and will intrude on the historic site of the Battle of Marathon. IOC officials have said they will not move the Games but have pressed Athens to speed up preparations. In April 2000, IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch publicly blistered Athens' performance as the worst he had seen in 20 years at the helm of the Olympic movement. In response, the Greek government brought back Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, the conservative politician who had masterminded Athens' winning Games bid, to oversee the organizing committee. 2003 stories

The Eighth World Games 2009 and Beyond After signing the contract for hosting The 7th World Games 2005 with the city of Duisburg, during the 2000 Annual General Meeting in Monaco, the IWGA has received tentative bids from prospective candidates for hosting The 8th World Games 2009. So far, the prospective candidates for the 2009 edition come from America, Asia, Europe and the Oceanic region. The IIWGA Executive Committee has established the detailed tender documentation and the procedures which are to govern the bidding by the candidate hosts. The bidding is formally open from January 2003. The host of The World Games is required to provide the technical facilities for the different sports and offer full board accommodation to the participating athletes and officials. Among other important aereas to be addressed in the official bid are: security, medical services, doping control and media facilities. Promotional activities in connection with The World Games and a solid concept to broadcast them worldwide are the key ingredients for a successful bid. A preliminary arrangement for the host broadcaster to produce the international television signal is essential.

Olympic Truce The Olympic Truce The idea of the Olympic Truce is based upon the deep belief that athletics and Olympic ideals can contribute to the creation of a peaceful and better world. The basic aim of this endeavor is to facilitate initiatives that promote dialog, reconciliation, mutual understanding, solidarity and peace. The Olympic Truce is a performance of all people and as such it aims at emphasizing the significance of respecting peaceful co-existence. Greece decided that it should offer something unique, something above and beyond for the implementation of peace, aside the principles of the Olympic Games and the Cultural Olympics; that is the reason for the country's pursuance and achievement in reviving the Olympic Truce. The significance of the effort concealed behind the Olympic Truce is the fact that it combines the strength of an Olympic Movement, the credibility of the athletic movement and the enthusiasm of the younger generation. It should be clarified that it is not for the younger generation alone, but for anyone and everyone who supports and is willing to work for peace under the auspice of the Olympic Ideal. The objective is to combine the spirit and the dynamics of these movements and to seek contributions to resolve existing worldwide conflicts.
