Olympic Games: An Historic Proposal By: T. Campbell Introduction Task Process ... Ancient Olympic Games Event Brochure Introduction In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks began a tradition that lasted for over 1100 years. They stopped all wars and each city-state sent their best athletes to the plain at Olympia to compete for the honor of Zeus at the Olympic Games. In 2004 A.D. the modern Olympic Games will be held in Athens, Greece. This return to the country of the Games' ancient origins has the potential to be an historic event. However, the success depends on a careful plan. Introduction Task Process Evaluation ... Resources Task Your group will be creating a proposal for the events of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The Greek government has ordered that the proposals must focus on the historical roots of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. A successful proposal will design an Olympic Games that allows the spectators and athletes to experience the ancient tradition like no other modern Olympics has ever done.
  • Your proposal must identify the most important ancient events and include an explanation of how the historical roots of each of those events will be preserved in the modern competition.

How the Olympic Games began
Thousands of years ago, people of ancient Greece believed the body was just as important as the mind. They participated in foot and chariot races and enjoyed boxing and wrestling.
The year 776 B.C. was the date of the first recorded results in a sports competition held during a ceremony to honour Zeus, the Greek god. The Games were then held every four years in the Valley of Olympia – and thus became known as the Olympic Games.
Since that time there has been a decline – and a rise – of the Olympic Games and spirit:
  • In 393 AD, Roman Emperor, Theodosius I orders the Games to be closed down.

A History of the Olympics
According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles (the Roman Hercules), a son of Zeus. Yet the first Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BCE (though it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years already). At this Olympic Games, a naked runner, Coroebus (a cook from Elis), won the sole event at the Olympics, the stade - a run of approximately 192 meters (210 yards). This made Coroebus the very first Olympic champion in history. The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor

HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES Beginning in 776 B.C., the Olympic Games were held in the Valley of Olympia in Greece as a religious festival involving one event, a stade race held over 192 meters. By about 650 B.C., the Ancient Games were held over five days, involving running, wrestling, the pentathlon, horse riding and chariot racing. Athletes competed in the nude and upon victory were awarded a crown of wild olive leaves. Women and slaves were strictly forbidden to attend the Games under the punishment of death. In between, the 1976 Games were boycotted by 32 nations - most of them from black Africa - because the IOC did not ban New Zealand who earlier had toured racially-segregated South Africa in a rugby tournament. The 1980 Games were boycotted by 64 nations, led by the USA, to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan on Dec 27, 1979. The 1984 were boycotted by 14 communist Eastern Bloc nations, led by the USSR, as revenge for 1980.

A History of the Winter Olympics THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
When Utah's Olympics unfold in February, so too will the latest chapter of a story that began in 1924 in Chamonix, the little French town at the foot of Mt. Blanc.
In more than three quarters of a century, the history of the winter Games has played out in such snowy wonderlands as St. Moritz, Innsbruck, Sapporo, and Lake Placid. The plot has twisted around engaging personalities: figure skaters Sonja Henie, Dick Button and Peggy FLeming; skiiers Jean-Claude Killy, Toni Sailer and Rosi Mittermaier; speedskater Eric Heiden.
In 1980 there was a miracle, just when the United States seemed in need of one. In 1936, there was nationalism of another sort as Adolph Hitler presided over the Opening Ceremony. There has been the Harding and Kerrigan soap opera, the triumph of Dan Jansen, the larger-than-life Hermannator and Tomba.

Twenty-eight countries participated enthusiastically, and it was clear that the games had survived both the world's conflicts, and the 12-year span between the last Olympics. The IOC awarded the 1976 Olympics to Denver, Colorado, but after two years of preparation and financial squabbling, the people of Colorado refused to fund the major event through public taxes. Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

This week:
The Games Are Banned
After Rome conquered Greece in 146 B.C., the Olympics diminished in importance and religious significance. Many athletes became interested only in winning money. In A.D. 393, the Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games because they had declined in quality. Over time, people forgot about the Olympics, and no Games were held for more than 1,500 years. Then, in 1875, a group of German archaeologists came upon the ruins of the Stadium of Olympia. Seeing the ruins inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, to organize a modern international Olympics. He believed that individuals needed to test their athletic skills against others.

Honoring Heroes
Of all the athletic contests held in ancient Greece, none rivaled the Olympics. The Games, which honored Zeus, the king of all gods, served many purposes: religious, political, and athletic. No one knows exactly why the Games began. Historians believe that the early Greeks organized competitions as a way to honor important individuals who had died. Later on, the events took on religious meaning. They also became a source of both local and national pride. The first Olympics took place in 776 B.C. at Olympia. The Games consisted of only one event, a 210-yard sprint known as the

The Olympic Games Story
The Ancient Games The original games were held at Olympia, in Greece, and took place every 4 years.
Exactly when they started is not known, but the first written records date from 776BC, and the games continued until they were banned by a decree of the Roman Emperor Theodore I, "the Great", in 393AD So the last games held were in 389AD, which meant the games had been held 293 times (at least). The actual events in the games varied from time to time, but mainly were to do with running, wrestling, boxing and chariot racing. In those games there was interest only in who won, and the winner was awarded an olive wreath. Women were not admitted to the games, either as competitors or spectators. Revival Ernst Curtius, a German archaeologist, did a lot of excavation work at Olympia and, presumably inspired by that, in 1852 suggested that the Olympic Games should be revived. This idea was well-received by many and was finally taken up by Baron Pierre de Courbertin and, at his instigation, in Paris on 23 June 1894, a committee agreed to re-establish the Olympic Games, with a first meeting to be held at Athens in 1896 and every 4 years thereafter. Apart from the war years when no games were held, this has been kept up. In the ancient games, wars were suspended in order to allow the games to continue. The early games of the modern Olympics were of varied quality and success, with many highlights and low points. There were several calls for the games to be discontinued at various times but they always managed to keep going and, once they were re-established in 1948 (after a 12-year break), their future seemed assured. However, since that time they have become subject to much political action (boycotts and terrorism) so that it is not inconceivable that the future might see them discontinued or modified in some way.
