History Of The Modern Olympic Games
The Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece for almost 1200 years beginning in 776 B.C. The sports were Pentathlon (comprised of Discus, Javelin, Jumping, Running and Wrestling), Running, Boxing, Wrestling, Pankration (a mix of Boxing and Wrestling), Chariot racing and Horse Riding.
Athens The Olympic revival began in 1896 when the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece with 245 athletes from 14 nations. Since then, the number of athletes, nations represented and the variety of spots have increased, with over 10,000 competitors from 199 countries participating in the 2000 Games in Sydney Australia. Salt Lake City Winter sports were added the Olympic Games as early as 1908 with figure skating. Ice hockey debuted in 1920. In 1924 the first separate Winter Olympic Games were held in Chaminix, France. Beginning in 1994 the Winter Olympic Games were scheduled to be in different years from the Summer Games, so now there is an Olympic Games every two years, alternating winter and summer.

Ancient Olympic Games The first Olympic Games at Olympia were held in 776 BC. They began as a religious festival, were held every four years, and continued for a thousand years. They were held in a sacred, fertile valley of Ancient Greece, in Olympia. Athletes came to Olympia and trained full-time for ten months. They had to undergo an examination by a ten-member panel, who assessed them on their parentage, character and physical endowments. As the games approached, thousands of spectators gathered in Olympia, transforming the little village into a thriving metropolis. At the first games in 776 BC, until 724 BC, the only event held was the stadium-length foot race (stade). The length of the race was based on the legend that Hercules, the god of Physical Strength, ran this distance in one breath. The earliest recorded winner at the Olympics was Coroebus of Elis, who won the 776 BC stade race. At later Olympiads, the "diaulos" (400 yards) and then the "dolichos" (3.3 miles) were added. In 680 BC, chariot racing appeared. The charioteers were professionals who raced over nine miles in the hippodrome. The winners, who lined up to receive the trophy, were the wealthy owners. Although women were barred from competing at the Games, they were sometimes declared winners because they owned the horses and chariots.

What is the History and
Meaning of the Olympic Games?
an essay, by
Michael Simos

6th grade, Montgomery Elementary, Atlanta (September 1995)
Foreword Why are the Olympic Games so important? Why will people from all around the world come in the summer of 1996 to Atlanta to either watch or compete in them? Why is it that billions of people around the world will sit in front of their television sets to watch these games? To answer these questions we need to go back in history to find the meaning of the Olympic Games. 1. The Ancient Games. In ancient Greece, sports and competition were very important. The Greeks believed that physical exercise and mental training were connected to each other. The Greek word for education meant the development of the entire human being and could not be divided into physical and mental education, because the mind cannot exist without the body, and the body has no meaning without the mind. Their rule of thumb was, "Educate children with gymnastics and music." Religion encouraged this kind of education, and great athletic and musical contests were held in holy places, under the protection of the gods, and in front of thousands of spectators from all over Greece. The contests were called Games, and the most famous were held at the Sanctuary of Olympia in southwestern Greece. The Olympian or Olympic Games started in 776 BC, and were held every four years in honor of Zeus, the king of the mythical Greek gods. They were at their peak in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, but they were suppressed in 394 AD by the Roman emperor Theodosius I.

The story of the Commonwealth Games
The inspiration for the Commonwealth Games is thought to be the Reverend Astley Cooper. In July 1891 he wrote in "Greater Britain" magazine and later on 31st October 1891 in "The Times" suggesting a "Pan-Britannic-Pan-Anglican Contest and Festival…every four years as a means of increasing the goodwill and good understanding of the British Empire". It was another 40 years before the first Games took place, but the Rev. Cooper's initiative merits inclusion at the start of this history. The events, which later took place that eventually led to the establishment of the British Empire Games, are chronicled as below: Festival of the Empire: Mr Richard Coombes (President of Amateur Athletic Union of Australia) brought attention to the value of an "Empire Sports" tournament.
Inter-Empire Championships Part of the "Festival of the Empire" held to mark the coronation of King George V in London. Teams from Australia, Canada, South Africa and United Kingdom competed in Athletics, Boxing, Swimming and Wrestling. Competitions in Track and Field Events between the British Empire and the USA were held in London after the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games in London.

Women and the Olympic Games
The ancient Olympic Games certainly marginalized the female sex. Pausanias relates the story of Callipateira , who dressed up as a trainer in order to see her son compete. He adds that when she inadvertently revealed her true identity in her excitement at seeing her son win, the Greeks were concerned enough by the breach of protocol to insitute a new rule requiring trainers as well as athletes to strip before entering the stadium . However, a female presence remained a strong undercurrent at Olympia . Although married women like Callipateira were forbidden to watch the Games , maidens could attend. And the Olympic rules did provide an exception for one married woman, the priestess of Demeter , who received honored seating by the altar in the stadium.
The Heraea Games
In fact, Olympia even offered an opportunity for female athletes to compete. The Heraea Games , administered by the Sixteen Women and other married women for maiden competitors, took place every four years. According to

Games History

In 1891 a young Yorkshireman named J. Astley Cooper proposed that a festival be staged "to draw closer the ties between the nations of the empire." Although his idea was enthusiastically supported throughout the British Empire, it was not yet time for his dream to become reality. Twenty years after Cooper first spoke out, the seeds of the modern sport spectacle known as the Commonwealth Games were sown during festivities celebrating the coronation of King George V. A Festival of Empire was a highlight of the celebrations, and part of that Festival was an Inter-Empire Sports Meeting. Teams came from Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Canada, South Africa, and the United Kingdon to compete in track and field, swimming, boxing, and wrestling. Edging the United Kingdom by a single point, Canada was awarded the Lonsdale Cup, an impressive silver trophy weighing 340 ounces. More important than the trophy was the significance attached to the gathering itself by a number of the participants, particularly Richard Coombes of Australia, who would spend the rest of his life working to establish an "Empire Sports" gathering. In the years following the Festival of Empire-interrupted only by the heart breaking years of the First World War -sport enthusiasts from all over the Empire worked tirelessly to promote the concept of an Empire meet.
