Real Estate and Property in Greece The Modern Olympics - Athens 2004 HOME The Modern Olympics It wasn't until after efforts by French Baron Pierre De Coubertin and the Greek Dimitrios Vikelas that the games were brought back to life after nearly 1500 years in the wilderness. De Doubertin believed that sport was a very strong power that could inspire a feeling of unity and peace among the many nations of the world. He believed that this desire could be brought about with the revival of the Olympic Games. After an unsuccessful attempt at reviving the games, he finally achieved his ambition. In 1894 at an international congress, that was actually devised for the study of amateur sports, he voiced his view on the revival of the Olympic Games, and was delighted when the other countries participating in the congress agreed with him. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded that year. Held in Athens in 1896 at the Panatheniac Stadium, the games heralded a welcomed return to the original beliefs and virtues of the ancient games. With competitors from 14 nations, the games commenced on April 6th and came to a climax on 15th April. There were 43 events, which were competed in by 245 athletes, all of whom were male.

108 years after holding the first "Modern Olympics", the games are finally returning home to their birthplace; Athens will be holding the 2004 Olympics. The Olympic Games are probably the most important sporting event in the world, and for Greece, the 2004 Games will be even more special. The Olympic Games however, have a lot more to their history than the first of the modern games that took place in Athens in 1896. Brief History of the Olympics The first recorded Olympic Games took place in Olympia, in the beautiful region of Elias, in 776 BC. There is evidence however, to support the claim that the games had been taking place a lot earlier than 776 BC, but these were not as organised or held every four years, as the 776 BC games had been. The four-year gap between the games was called the Olympiad, and the Greeks based their calander on this time frame.
Olympia - Home of the Ancient Olympics The name of each Olympiad was named after the competitor of the stadium race, which was the favourite of all the events. The first Olympiad was named Koroibos of Elias, as he was the winner of the stadium race in 776 BC.

AMERICA AT THE FIRST MODERN OLYMPICS
    by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 1137. Today, amateur America goes to its first Olympic Games. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. B y the 6th century BC, athletic games were regular events in Greece. The Olympic Games might be the oldest of those. The first records we have of Olympic champions are from 776 BC. The games themselves were probably hundreds of years older still. The earliest contest was a 200-yard run. Later, more games were added: horse races, other foot races, wrestling, javelin, discus. Women weren't allowed to compete or even watch. As the games grew, fat purses replaced olive wreaths. Athletes turned professional. Rome made major spectacles of the games. Finally the Christian Emperor Theodosius was fed up with the pagan and commercial quality of the games. He abolished them in 393 AD. They stayed dead for 1500 years. Then, in 1892, a young French aristocrat, Pierre de Coubertin, called for an Olympic revival. He believed the games would create international harmony. His efforts led to the first modern Olympics in Athens, in 1896. The King of Greece opened the new games.

Salt Lake City Winter sports were added the Olympic Games as early as 1908 with figure skating. Ice hockey debuted in 1920. In 1924 the first separate Winter Olympic Games were held in Chaminix, France. Olympic games: The Modern Olympics The modern revival of the Olympic games is due in a large measure to the efforts of Pierre, baron de Coubertin, of France. They were held, appropriately enough, in Athens in 1896, but that meeting and the ones that followed at Paris (1900) and at St. Louis (1904) were hampered by poor organization and the absence of worldwide representation. The first successful meet was held at London in 1908, and since then the games have been held in cities throughout the world. World War I prevented the Olympic meeting of 1916, and World War II necessitated the cancellation of the 1940 and 1944 meetings. The number of entrants, competing nations, and athletic events have increased steadily. To the traditional events of track and field athletics

The Olympic Games in Ancient Greece
For many years, the ancient Greeks gathered in the beautiful Valley of Olympia to offer sacrifices to their gods. In time, the practice came to include games and contests. These games and contests came be known as the Olympic Games, with their first recorded date being 776 B.C. The Games were held every four years until A.D. 394. additional events were added. Eventually, the Olympic Games became a five-day festival that was deeply
