A stroll through Manly's history
A walking tour guide published by Manly Council in NSW draws the attention of residents and visitors to the many works of art in the area. Public art works in Manly reflect the social and historical development of the locality and Australian art. Mayor Sue Sacker said the project reflects the continued commitment by Manly Council to the cultural development of the area. The artworks include a neo classical Greek woman honouring Manly's 1924 Olympic medallists; a sculpture celebrating the standard swimming stroke, the Australian Crawl; and Sydney's first Anzac Memorial. To peruse many of the works, art lovers have the added pleasure of a stroll along Manly's famous beaches. The walking tour guide comes with a handy map, photographs and captions relating the history and other details of public sculptures along the beaches. By reading the Guide, people can learn about when a piece was commissioned and why, gaining insight into the history of the area. "Ave, triumphator!" is the main event in the celebration of the hundredth birthday of the oldest Olympic champion in the world. The event will be stylistically linked to the sporting biography of Leon Štukelj, Olympic history, to anthropological and civilisational trends in physical training, the body aesthetic, and the synchronism of mind and body. "Ave, triumphator!" is the identity of culture - art, therefore - and sport. The celebration will seek out referential trends in Hellenism and Antiquity. On the ontological level (relationship of the subject to the universe, to the self and others) we will extol the identity of mind and body. On the aesthetic level we will delve into all the diverse manifestations of the body aesthetic, deriving from the relationships between body and movement, body and space, and body and time. Gymnastics will be the Archimedean focal point of the celebrations: "where beauty overcomes power".

History of Watford Joggers
The jogging boom hit the UK in the early seventies following several years of mass hysteria in the United States. Jim Fix and others wrote best selling books listing the lasting virtues of putting one foot in front of another - it was a sport for all ages and groups formed encompassing a complete age spectrum. The whole family could join in and the only gear needed was a pair of trainers, shorts and a tee shirt (at least during the summer months). Here in the UK Jogging became the 'in' word and groups of like-minded people began to form clubs. In Watford Jack Harris of the Harriers tried to form a jogging section but after several months of press advertising and patiently waiting for the masses to appear he gave up the struggle. The only person to join Jack was a guy from Hemel Hempstead - Derek Greggains (who later became a Watford Jogger). Following the failure of the Watford Harriers to excite the populus of Watford to jog, I received a call from Alan Flint and with his wife Pat, Audrey and I joined them for dinner at the Belair Restaurant in Northwood where the idea of Watford Joggers was conceived. The inaugural jog took place from the Gade Avenue car park, Cassiobury Park on a Sunday in November 1976. I race walked and Alan jogged with a group of about 20 who managed to reach the hill leading up the park past the paddling pool.

History
Given that the first lawn tennis club was only formed in 1872, it is testimony to its popularity that it featured at Athens just 38 years later. But the sport's roots can be traced much further back than that. Real, or royal, tennis was popular in France around the 10th century. Those early versions of the sport didn't even feature rackets and had more in common with the schoolyard game of handball than modern tennis. It wasn't until the 1500s that a racket made from wood and strung with animal gut was developed, but the game didn't really resemble modern tennis until the second half of the 19th century. By that time it was becoming popular in Britain. By 1877 a variant closely related to the modern game had been developed. In this year the All-England Croquet Club hit on a novel idea: they would hold a lawn tennis tournament to raise money for the club.

San Diego’s three "Team del Sol" synchronized skating teams ( senior novice juvenile ) are based in San Diego, one of Southern California’s most popular vacation destinations. Get more information about the sport of synchronized skating (such as rules and regulations, divisions, elements, and the new name change) HERE ! Formerly known as the Icettes (senior/junior), Sun Blazers (intermediate), and Starlites (juvenile), our teams changed their name to Team del Sol in 1997 to reflect San Diego’s Spanish heritage. Team del Sol translates to "Team of the Sun."
With an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees, ice skating is uncommon in San Diego. The availability of surfing, volleyball, golfing and other year-round sports often makes it difficult to find skaters with the ability to perform at the National and International level, however we have built a precision program that has grown and strengthened since it began in the late 1970's as a "drill team." We competed in the very first Nationals, which was held in Bowling Green, Ohio in 1984, and we've been going strong ever since! We have been Pacific Coast Gold Medallists since 1985. The Juvenile team achieved the Bronze medal at the National Championships in 1986. Since that time we went through a period of building depth. Now team members that were on our juvenile team have developed into masterful senior division skaters, giving the quality needed to perform at the national and international levels. The goal has been and continues to be to develop a solid foundation to achieve national titles in all three divisions and to compete in the international arena.

MATILDAS GAIN AS GOOD AN OLYMPIC DRAW AS COULD HOPE
The Olympic Games Football Draw Ceremony was conducted this morning with a lavish do at the Sydney Town Hall. Some of the biggest names in international football had flown in from around the world to witness first hand what is always such a big part of a major world tournament - just who plays who, where and when. As had already been determined some time ago, Australia (as hosts) and the USA (as reigning gold medallists) were the two seeded teams. As it turned out, the Matildas could not have asked for a more favourable draw for the 8-team 2000 Olympic tournament. The big three over the short international history of our sport - 1991 and 1999 World Cup champions and Olympic gold medallists USA, current World Cup and Olympic silver medallists China, and 1995 World Cup champions and Olympic bronze medallists Norway - all ended up in the same group, as the balls were drawn out under the direction of FIFA Secretary General Michel Zen-Ruffinen. Not that the Australians' draw is an easy one. The Matildas will face two European nations in Germany and Sweden, plus the flamboyant Brazil.

Olympic Field Hockey Medalists
History
Men's field hockey has been an Olympic sport since 1908 and women's field hockey was added to the program in 1980. In 1920 and 1932, the men's standings were determined by a round robin tournament and the women's version of the sport used a round robin tournament in 1980 and 1984. In all other years, a single-elimination tournament has been used, with a championship game to decide the gold and silver medals. For those years, the score shown under "Final" is the score of the gold medal game. The tournaments begin with two pools of teams playing preliminary round tournaments. In men's play, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals. In the women's tournament, the top three teams advance. Top of page
