For each of the sports listed below that are offered in the Hawaii games, successful participants in the Hawaii games may enter the national games. Complete rules and minimum performance standards can be obtained from the website of the National Senior Games Association at www.nsga.com , or by contacting the Hawaii Senior Olympics. Cost to enter the national games is $90 for the first sport, and $25 additional for each additional sport entered. The first time I ever paid any attention to the Olympics was in 1984, at the Summer Games. I was so excited that the U.S. was doing so well in so many events. I realized later that the main reason was that all the other top countries were boycotting the games. I got interested again over the next several Summer Games, but not to the extent of 1984. But in 1996, I got really interested again as me and my wife became engrossed in the games. I'm not a big fan of most of the Olympics television coverage, though, as NBC has been pretty bad. Too many excessively cheesy non-sports stories and too much switching between sports makes it difficult to watch for too long. I've also never really been a big fan of the Winter Games, mainly, I guess, because the U.S. has never been that big a competitor in them in my lifetime. LATEST NEWS National Rules Govern Entrance categories for all sports will follow guidelines of the National Senior Games Association where available, including five-year age groupings for competition, and other rules designed to facilitate safe and fair competition. Complete rules, along with minimum performance standards, are posted on the Hawaii Senior Olympics web site. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be given in each category of each event to the first-, second- and third-place finishers, respectively. Award ceremonies will be conducted in each sport, as appropriate. Venues public schools and the University of Hawaii. Who runs the competition? Governance of the Hawaii Senior Olympics is the responsibility of the HSGA board of directors. This group will establish policy and has final voice on all matters relating to the competition. Volunteers from the Hawaii community will assist with conducting the individual and team competitions, supported by HSGA staff. YMCA Partnership HSGA is enlisting the cooperation and involvement of key organizations in Honolulu which already are conducting programs for seniors.
