Technology and Innovation in the Classroom Learning about the Internet Designing Lessons for the Internet Distance Learning
The Internet is more than just a series of electronic books that can be read on the computer. The Internet is an interactive media that connects people and ideas in a community forum. Students participating in distance learning must learn to: research, determine validity and relevance of resources, communicate effectively with others, collaborate with others to solve problems, and publish the results of their study.
Teachers are facilitators in this process. Teachers design or find programs on the Internet that meet their students needs so that they can guide their students. Then evaluation of the outcome of the project can be a cooperative process.

The lessons you have learned, the solutions you have devised, the problems you have encountered, are of interest to other schools and groups around the world, as they might be facing similar problems. We invited schools around the world to help us put together an on-line global atlas of student action on the environment."
    Center for Indigenous Research
"From April 13 through May 15 of 1998, during an excavation of an extinct mammoth in New Mexico, researchers from the Center for Indigenous Research made history. Armed with a digital camera, a lap top computer, and a dedicated web site manager, images of the excavation and field notes were uploaded daily. Anyone in the world could log on to our web site and view the dig as it unfolded on a daily basis. Viewers of our web site were able to e-mail the researchers in the field questions about the dig. We called this our Virtual Mammoth project and it was an extraordinary opportunity for people all over the world."

K-12 Heartland has been supporting integration of technology into the curriculum by subsidizing the subscription fee to several Internet projects. The Internet projects from OnlineClass ( http://www.onlineclass.com ) include a curriculum guide with activities, instructional strategies, background information, supplemental materials, and links to national standards. The projects do not require you to teach activities at a prescribed time or pace and are flexible so that an entire class or a small group of students can participate. OnlineClass has moved to a flexible quarterly system with all classes available for 10-week quarters. With these longer programs, schools can better work around time constraints, vacations, testing schedules, and special events. If teachers want a shorter experience, they can work intensively or selectively over a period of a few weeks. All teaching material will be posted on the web so that schools can work at their own pace. Moderated discussion forums, online guests, and interactive features will run throughout the quarter. OnlineClass quarters run:
    January 10 - March 17
    March 20 - May 26
July 3 - September 8 Due to the increase in the subscription fee for the OnlineClass projects, schools will be asked to pay $30 for each Internet project. Heartland will bill your school.

While recognising the principles of privacy and freedom of expression, ECPAT believes that the best interests of the child, whether individually or within his or her community, takes precedence over these rights. Thus ECPAT is committed to preventing child pornography on the Internet, and the related issue of online solicitation of minors, and bringing perpetrators to justice. In 1997, ECPAT International undertook a two-year program looking at child pornography and the effect of computer technologies. Legislation, law enforcement and the tension between the rights of the individual and the need to protect children were a primary focus of the project. Other aims were to understand the extent of the problem and identifying international solutions. As part of the program, ECPAT groups and other NGOs held consultations to explore the situation of child pornography within their country and the global context. These took place in New Zealand, Sweden, Australia, USA, Canada and Taiwan.

Return to the main story, "Changing the Way Teachers Teach." TIPS OF THE DAY
    • Don't depend on the technology itself to improve teaching. Training should focus on how technology can enhance learningand be embedded in real projectsrather than simply on how to work the machines. Teachers need ongoing one-on-one and just-in-time instruction in using technology. Occasional in-service workshops aren't enough. Teachers change their practices more readily when they can work in teams and have the support of administrators. Teachers are more likely to use technology effectively when they have a computer at home on which to practice. Teachers need time to rework their lessons to use technology effectively and experiment with new teaching styles. If teachers are encouraged to share with other teachers what they are trying in the classroom, momentum for change can grow. Technical support for teachers should be available at the building level, not just at the district level.

    Introduction
Looking for a fun, enriching way to integrate the Internet into your curriculum? Consider hosting a collaborative project. Your students will acquire online communication skills and meet children from around the world. You will develop creative, technical, and administrative expertise, discover new educational resources, and have the chance to collaborate with talented colleagues. Your class work will be digitally showcased for parents and administrators to appreciate. And best of all, you only need e-mail and Internet access to participate!
    Become a Participant
Long before I became a project host, I gained valuable experience as a project participant. Participating is a great way to learn how online collaborative projects work, and the perfect opportunity to network in the online educators' community. To find an appropriate project for your class, simply conduct a search at a premier site such as the Internet Projects Registry . You can refine your search using criteria such as "age," "date," "curriculum area," and "technology tools." In fact, you and your class may have so much fun participating in projects that you never even get around to hosting your own! But if you have an innovative project idea that you're itching to develop, or want the opportunity to build your educational skill set, read on.

So much has been centered on getting the great information super highway to ramp directly into schools that we may not be prepared for the REASON for teachers to use the Internet ways of managing information and new classroom experiences that have the potential to make this new medium one of the most vital communications tools of the twenty-first century classroom.
